Happy Halloween! What is the scariest book you've ever read?

Since our discussion book is not garnering much discussion, let's hear about other, scarier books! :)

Re: Happy Halloween! What is the scariest book you've ever read?

  • It and The Shining are probably the ones that jump out to me most, but man do I have fond memories of being scared silly at the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book! I can still get myself creeped out thinking about the girl who always wore the ribbon around her neck...

  • I haven't found a book that has scared me, but I really want to!! The only book that maybe creeped me out a smidge was Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill.

  • I have read the Exorcist, all kinds of SK, and other so called "horror" books, but like @hoycie, I have yet to be scared by a book (but horror movies give me nightmares forever).  I am a visual person, so unless I see it, it won't scare me.

I think the scarier books are the "disturbing" books and more real life things like Jack Ketchum's "Girl Next Door" which is the most disturbing book I have ever read.

  • I have a long list of books from recs on here, but I'm too much of a wuss to read any of them. I get creeped out very easily. I'm the person you see turning off the light and then running across the room to get under the covers.

  • I have never found a book start-to-finish scary, but I can pick scenes out from books that totally totally scare me and my mind revisits all the time.

In Bag of Bones, the letter magnets rearranging themselves to communicate (we'll never have these at my house!)

In Pet Cemetery, Gage getting hit by a truck. *shudder*

In Heart Shaped Box, the ghosts with their eyes scribbled out.

In The Road, the man filling the bathtubs because he knows something's about to go down.

In Afraid (by Jack Kilborn) the scene at the beginning where she can hear what she thought was her husband downstairs, but then she hears his boat coming across the lake.

    I could go on.

I think I count It and The Shining as "the scariest" because there are several scary scenes in each book that I can see just perfectly in my brain.

I am usually scared of horror novels when they begin but as soon as we "see" the monster/ghost/whatever, I'm not scared anymore.

This is by far the BEST scene I have ever read in a book.  I LOVED this scene.  I was captivated.  I loved the tension of it.

Just read the first chapter.  The rest goes downhill, but that first chapter was the bees knees.

  • Heart Shaped Box! Ghosts scare me more than anything. The only SK novel that's really scared me was Bag of Bones.

  • The only books that have ever creeped me out are The Shining and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.

  • Probably It and Desperation were the scariest, but a few years back, when I was reading The Diviners I had some serious nightmares and paranoia too.
