How to wash afghan/knitted blankets?

Does anyone have a handmade afghan blanket? How do you wash it?
I found a few google results where people washed on the gentle cycle and air-dried and/or put in the dryer.
What's your suggestion?
I reeeeeaaaallly don't want to hand wash!

Re: How to wash afghan/knitted blankets?

  • My dad (the laundry guy in my parents house) says gentle cycle, but take to a laundrymat and use a front-loader machine.  That way you can make sure you have plenty of space for it (you can use a big one at the laundromat) and it doesn't get twisted or pulled like in a normal machine.   I think then I put it in the dryer on low but it's been awhile since we've done it so I can't remember.
  • I have a knitted afghan that I wash and dry just like normal...depending on the kind of yarn it may lose some softness, but mine was not very fuzzy in the first place so it has stayed looking and feeling the exact same!
  • I had a beautiful knitted afghan that I absolutely loved. I had success washing - just to be safe I would use the 'hand wash' cycle, then I would hang to dry. Unfortunately, our dog curled up on this blanket after being at the dog park and my fiancee decided he would wash it - to this day I don't know what setting he used, or what he did differently (read: wrong) but the blanket was ruined! Lesson learned - if I ever get a knitted afghan again, I'm the only one who will be washing it!
