I have thought about this one and I am not sure what to share. A few things have happened in my life that have truly shaped me. My parents are divorced, my dad is an addict, other family things growing up, etc. But those are kind of depressing and (unfortunately) not particularly uncommon. So maybe I should share a positive one?
In college, I was an RA (Residential Advisor) it truly helped me be who I am today (along with my whole University experience).
Where I went to college, being an RA is very competitive. Hundreds of people apply fall quarter for what is about 50 spots, to be an RA the following academic year. They do a “paper cut” of about half of the applicants and invite the other half in for a two+ day interview process. Those who pass this are then allowed take a four credit class and possibly be placed in a Residence Hall (dorm) for the next academic year. Those who complete the class/other requirements then complete a two week training before the beginning of fall quarter. There is also ongoing training as an RA.
I was an RA for three years. Very few RAs do it for three years (there were two others who were with me the full three years). And I did two summers (which is a separate/different program).
I really enjoyed it because being an RA taught me so much about planning, leadership, community and gave me a very different perspective on a lot of things. I was also required to do a LOT of things outside my comfort zone. I also had to live with (see every day) people who didn’t like me (hated?) me very much because I had documented them for doing something unsafe for themselves or the community.
It was an amazing job for preparing me for my HR career. I have to deal with a lot of people who aren’t very happy with me/deliver bad news, and I often work outside my comfort zone.
I made some life-long friends with fellow RAs and some of my residents.
