GTKY: DH and I/Proposal Story
DH and I met when I was 15 and he was 18 in the church youth group. We dated for just shy of 7 years before we got married, and we both finished high school and undergrad college before we tied the knot. We lived about 15 minutes from each other (both with our parents) for the first three years, and then I moved 3 ½ hours away from him to go to college for three years. After I finished undergrad, I moved home, and we got married 9 months later.
DH is a health inspector (inspects and gives scores to restaurants), but he also does soil analysis and permits for septic tanks. I am a nurse practitioner, but I’m still working as a medical oncology RN until I start my NP job in January.
Proposal story:
In Jan 2009 I accidently found the receipt for my engagement ring in DH’s jacket pocket. I couldn’t wait for him to propose! The weekend of Feb 6-8, 2009 DH came to visit me at college. For some reason, I just knew that he came to see me because he was going to propose! He got there on Friday (I was still in my RN clinical shift in the NICU), so he made me dinner, and then we went to see a movie.
Saturday morning we got up, and we made plans to go to a nature center where they rehab injured animals, and they have walking trails and ponds. We walked around for a while, and then decided to sit on a bench looking over one of the ponds where some ducks were swimming. We were just sitting there talking about how pretty it was, and DH tells me that he loves me. I, of course, tell him that I love him too. He said he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and I said “Really??!?!?!”. Then he moved from sitting on the bench to down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked if I would marry him. I replied with “are you shitting me?”, and he got this strange look on his face and told me that was not shitting me, and then I said yes and started crying. We then left the nature center, went back to my dorm, and watched Cars. We went to dinner that evening at an awesome Greek restaurant, and called everyone to let them know that we were engaged!
