Black friday

I know I love shopping, so-
What is on the top of your list this year to buy?
Do you black Friday shop?
How do you budget for Black Friday?

Re: Black friday

  • For me I want a nice xmas present for ds, and possibly a bed. The furniture outlet by us sometimes runs some insane deals during big holidays so hopefully we can get his big boy bed for when he's ready for it. Dh wants a swivel TV mount. I like running into cvs and Walgreens to see what they have cheap and free.
Yes! Every year. Although I'm trying to get more and more done online. I love the retailers that are doing that!
We budget at the beginning of the month for it. We usually end up wrong though, so after the damage is done we may allocate some to another fund, like Christmas presents or house, etc. if we really splurge like last year when dh bought a new tv we will cut from December so we can fit it in.

  • I may be a total scrooge, but I personally detest Black Friday.  Nothing about it appeals to me.  Early mornings (and now, late Thanksgiving night?!), pushy crowds and the commercialization of Christmas?  No thank you.

  • Yea, I agree with als1982 and try to avoid all stores from black Friday until after Christmas. The crowds drive me crazy! I don't even think H and I are buying each other gifts this year, if we do want something fun it will be a joint gift, but we are just in total mortgage principle savings mode and we have a cruise in May next year, so that's all we want!

When we do buy a house next year, I'm sure I will feel different if we need large items like couches, Tv's etc.....

  • I honestly have always lived Black Friday shopping- although I do think Thursday night is getting pretty bad. You will have people show up if you wait until Friday! I used to sign up for the early shift every year when I was working retail because it went by so quickly. Now I mostly go for Christmas gifts and house hold stuff. It also helps that I now live in the south, so it isn't generally freezing out that night/morning. I always hated that!

  • I Love Black FRIDAY shopping. I am a little annoyed that it is on Thursday night.. takes the fun out of it. The thrill to me was getting up super early to get the deals... I dont have much on my radar this year, especially since we will heading to Chicago the weekend after where I can do some Michigan Ave shopping!

I agree with this completely.  I love waking up early and going shopping with my BFF but this Thursday night garbage a) disrupts the holiday and b) is too easy.  I'll probably still go Friday morning.  My strategy is to not hit the most popular malls in my area, but to go to Targets, etc. that are a little off the beaten path.  I can handle mall crowds but not traffic.

I'm not sure what's on my Christmas list this year yet.  I do more of my shopping at craft fairs but often on Black Friday I can snag the "big" gift for my mom or dad.  It's also a good time to refresh my work clothes and buy toy drive donations.
  • I think black Friday should be on friday. I feel bad for retail workers. My husband used to work at Best Buy and it was awful. That being said, we've still gone out on Friday late morning/early afternoon when the crowds are a lot less insane and there are still deals. We've been wanting to get a WiiU for awhile if there's a deal, plus we have 2 gift cards to use towards it. That would be our Christmas gift for ourselves. We haven't yet figured out what we'll be getting others but we usually snag a few deals on the same day.

  • I HATE the new thursday night hours, I hope most people boycot.

I generally do a lot of people watching and idea gathering on Black Friday, often I'll pick up some bargans on things H and I need or little gifts for co-workers.  I'm usually at my parents for Black Friday, so there's sales tax on everything, so I don't usually buy anything significant on Black Friday...if there's a super deal I may go shop online once we get home.

H and I have a slowly expanding list of wants/needs that I'l probably keep an eye out for this year.  our dishwasher is 26 years old and I hate our stove. If we happened to find a deal we'd probably shift some money out of savings and cash-flow the rest.

We're going low-budget on christmas gifts this year, I've started knitting some gifts for my family, gifts for H's sisters and their kids went unacknowledged and without thank yous last year, so I'm not super enthused about putting a lot of thought into those this year.

  • I refuse to go on Thursday night.  If people continue to go, then places will continue to be open.

Instead I go on Friday morning around 5 or 6am.  Then I can still get the good deals, but most of the heavy crowds are done.

Most of the time I just go for household items like bed sheets, pillows, cheap towels, etc.  Not necessarily Christmas gifts.  This year will be no different.

  • no no no to black thursday and friday shopping :)

Our total budget this year is $300 and I need to get started on it for sure.  I'm finishing up xmas lists this weekend and getting those out to family members.

  • now that they have shopping on thanksgiving, black friday really isn't that busy anymore from what I've heard.  It's more like black thursday.  Seriously though, I've found better deals with combining sales and coupons any other day of the year - I really haven't found amazing deals on black friday.

  • I NEVER shop on black friday - atleast not in the stores- unless there is a specific large item i'm after. Otherwise the crowds are just not worth the 2 dollars.

However- this year we do have a few things we need that we're specifically looking to snag deals on - but i refuse to get up at 3AM. DH is the morning person so he can go scout out the sales with his family if he wants and i'll meet him there at 8 - IF he says its worth my time. Otherwise i'll hang out at my MIL's where we're staying and parouse deals online. I'm a cyber monday shopper if anything.

  • Yep I never buy anything for anyone else on black Friday, I just usually buy house stuff. I guess the only thing this year are some flannel sheets. Last year I did get some awesome Rachel Ray pans, tupperware(which I buy every year on BF) and some Fiestaware at Khols. Other than that... nah, I love the shopping the day after Christmas better!

We bought Wii U last year on cyber Monday. I think I may have gotten it for a little less, but if you want video games, Toys R Us usually has them BOGO of BOGO 1/2 off and that's a good deal!
  • I am not Black Friday shopping. I just hate the whole thing. I went once when I was 16 and an older man shoved me to the floor for the TV I had in my cart. I was next to the the display with 20 other identical televisions still on it. I really hurt my back and arm and I just hated it.

I might do it when we have kids for the good deals but right now @#*% that noise.

  • My parents had their microwave go out on them last night.  My mom told me that they are going to home depot to get one for $250.  She said stores are already having black friday deals to get your money before you blow it all on the day of.

  • I've become a huge fan of cyber Monday, actually. Plenty of deals to be had online and no need to fight the crowds.

We certainly won't be going out on Thanksgiving.  We probably are going to have a hefty list for Home Depot for Friday, though.  I really want an air compressor and nail gun to be able to do some trim work, and they put a whole kit on sale every year for a great price. H also wants a table saw.  We're still debating that.  He has this plan for built-ins, but they will require a table saw.

Probably no electronics or anything this year though.

Yep that's true.  This year HD put their appliances on Black Friday "sale" before Thanksgiving.  The prices are good through Black Friday.  Costco is doing a similar thing - "pre-holiday" sales.

  • I went shopping once on black Friday, I stepped on a little boys hand in an insanely crowded bath n body works. The mom was letting him crawl around on the floor. The kid was screaming in pain and the mom just said "he's fine" and drug him off. I still get upset and I'm pretty sure I could have broken his hand. Never.again.

Our Christmas budget is super tight this year. We are saving for a house down payment and trying to save every penny.
  • I refuse to go shopping on Thanksgiving, or Black Friday.  Thursday is a day to be home with friends and/or family, and Friday, the deals are not worth the craziness that happens at the stores.

  • I am a black friday/ cyber monday fan. Last year I got a great deal on a gel mattress pad, the biggest box of chocolates you have ever seen (for my Grandma who only asked for chocolates), fisher price toys (to donate to the child I sponsored that year), and an ipad mini. I'm always amazed by the tech deals, but I am not dedicated enough to get up early and wait in line. I'm more of a see what is left type of person. I have also purchased a steam mop and a dyson on cyber monday.
  • My computer is on it's last leg so I may go out to get one. Kmart also will be having a deep freezer. I really want one of those so I can do freezer meals. I was looking at getting the camera from target but if I get a computer I may pass on the camera.

I love Black Friday shopping. Kmart opens at 6 am on Thanksgiving. My job is at a 24 hour mental health facility so employees have to work all holidays including Christmas so I don't have any issues with going shopping on Thanksgiving and the employees have to work because I want to shop. I'm sure that's selfish.
  • I do most of my shopping online from the comfort and ease of my home. No crowds, foul weather, bad attitudes of people and no fear of being trampled. Retailers have wised up to giving ample sales online too! Selection is way better. Peace and quiet.

Yuck to Black Friday. It's a symptom of all that is horribly wrong in our nation.

This year I've been hearing that many retailers aren't doing it in full or at all.

  • Ohhh black Friday! The best time of the year.  Even though its like a week long now.
