Fostering

Any one out there going through the process of becoming a licensed foster care parent? My wife and I are looking into it and they said they are in such need that they can get the licensing done rather quickly.  It is exciting and terrifying because there are so many unknowns.  Any advice for a newbie getting ready to make the leap?

Be the change you want to see in the world!

You might try the Adoption board --- there should also be some support groups you can find. Try your local area or the interwebs.
  • My husband and I were licensed foster parents, and had 3 siblings we were looking to adopt (ages 2, 4, 7).  To get licensed, we had the full background check, along with parenting classes we had to attend for approx 6 weeks I believe.

The challenge for us came of course after we got the kids.  It seemed that every evening, we had some sort of court ordered something:  Monday, mandatory visit with dad, Tuesday, visit with Grandma, Wed family therapy, Thurs individual counseling for the oldest.  Friday, visit mom at rehab Frankly, it was exhausting....

The biggest challenge we faced was dealing with the bio family.  We had been mis-lead by social services that all parental rights had been terminated.  In actuality there social services had been terminated, but their rights were still in tact.  The bio family was a soap opera train wreck.

You can read my blog regarding our journey:  http://thequestformrbubble.blogspot.com/  bottom line, my husband and I felt we had done what was needed....we kept the kids together until someone from the bio family could get their act together...
  • I have not personally gone through the motions, but please remember that each state has different rules/regulatios/hoops.

Now my aunt did emergency fostering (the late night removals).  She loved it, but got burnt out pretty fast.

  • I am sorry for posting in the wrong area, I didn't realize that there was an adoption section.  I'm still trying to figure everything out!

Could you please let me know where the Adoption board is?  I did a search and did not see anything  :(

  • I work for a foster care agency. Remember that as you are going through the process, it is invasive. We need to know WHO we are placing these children with so we sometimes need to know things that aren't very comfortable to talk about. There will be a lot of people coming on and out of your home (service providers). It's A LOT. but try to remember that we are there to help those kiddos. Finally, you may get some trying children. Please don't give up on them. God bless you guys, it's an awesome commitment!
