I'm a conservator of objects. Conservation wasn't originally what I thought I was going to do with my life. I thought going into college that I would study chemistry and then I would do research. Well, turns out, I don't really like chemistry research. I like knowing that the work I'm doing has an effect and a point. I don't have the patience for chemical research, which does have practical uses, but you as the chemist are so far removed from them... just not my thing. I love doing conservation research, because there it feels like I am
actually doing something that will be of immediate practical use. Luckily I figured this out during college, and was able to tack on an art history major to my chemistry major. I came to the UK for grad school because there are more educational opportunities in conservation in the UK than in the US, but that gets a bit controversial. Suffice to say it was the right decision for us.
DH studies theoretical physics, and is in the final year of his PhD. His thing is being able to sit and think through problems all day, he loves it. Lots of math. He wants to go into academia.
I would like to do my PhD, and have a proposal that I've been working on and submitting to various places. No success so far, but that's alright. It will get there, or it won't. Que sera sera.
I love love love my current job. I get to work with objects all day, and at the end of it all, they go on display for people to look at and learn from.
Re: GTKY: Jobs & things
Are you planning on staying in the UK long term?
"I DO NOT love that you think so many things revolve around you. I know you're bitter. I get it. But I'm over your feelings." The best person on the internet ever!
Really not sure at all how long we're going to be here. As little as one year, as long as five. It really depends on if I get into a PhD program, how long DH needs to FINISH finish his PhD, if my contract is extended, etc etc etc. We have no life plans beyond July currently.

My parents visit about once a year. DH's parents haven't been able to make it over yet, but they're planning to.
