What's the difference between Kindle and Kindle paperwhite?

I've tried to compare on amazon's site, and I can't tell the difference. Just the back light? Anything else?

thanks!

Re: What's the difference between Kindle and Kindle paperwhite?

  • The biggest difference yes is the backlighting... if you go here:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JG8GOWU/ref=nav_shopall_k_kdppnwn_top

and scroll down about 3/4 of the way there's a chart listing the features of all 3 versions of kindle.

Having had a kindle keyboard and now a paperwhite I do have to say I love the paperwhite but I miss the page turning buttons which they now have on the voyager.
  • I am just going to clarify that it is the lighting that is the difference between the two, but it is NOT back lighting. Back lighting is what a computer screen has, the paperwhite has a specially designed light in the frame that lights the page but is more like a book light. I hate reading with a back light gives me headaches, the paperwhite is wonderful.

Other than that no there isn't a difference. I believe you can get a Kindle with a physical keyboard but all paperwhite are touch screen which is unfortunate but not a huge deal

The biggest difference between the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Touch is the light on the Kindle Paperwhite. it is not a backlight but it's a front light delivered by a special light guide layer above the e-ink display. There's a good website with more info at http://ereadercomparison.co/

Maybe someone can clarify for me. Is the Voyage essentially the Paperwhite but with the page turning buttons? I really like the buttons on my current Kindle Keyboard. I can hold it in one hand and keep my thumb on the page turning button, and just press it when I want a page to turn. I suck at touch screen and would rather have the buttons. But I also really really like the Paperwhite.

  • @booknerd226‌ it looks like it has higher resolution, page turning buttons (which I would love too) and an auto adjusting light which with brighten or dim based on ambient light. Oh and it's thinner and lighter.

Sounds pretty nice but I am not sure the $200 price point is worth the difference right now. (well especially since I don't need a new one)

  • @aggiebug Wow it does sound great. I agree about that price though. Hopefully the price will go down next year.

  • (No idea what SN this will post under, but I'm sfgiantsjo)

My friend got a Voyager, so I got to play with it a bit. It's very similar to a paperwhite. Better resolution, and the lighting self adjusts to the light in the room. The page turning "buttons" are soft touch strips on the side - really nice. It's lighter by a little bit, as well. The screen is glass, but finely etched, so no reflections. It really looks like a true book page.

So, it's very nice, and definitely has improvements over the paperwhite. I don't think it's necessary to buy one right away, unless $200 is easily affordable to you.
