Help my face!

So, Evan was kind enough to offer me some makeup advice...

For everyday I wear powder, eye shadow and mascara. For special events or work conferences, I usually ramp it up slightly with foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, powder and mascara.

We are getting some family photos taken in a few weeks and I would like to look nice.

I'm most curious about blush and concealer, or anything else you think would be needed...talk to me about them, please? I feel pretty confident in my foundation, powder and mascara use and choices.

I have attached a picture of my made up face from a conference, I'm on the left.  Any insights would be appreciated.

Re: Help my face!

  • I have problem skin so I rely heavily on concealer!  I use one from /Covergirl and dab it on spots I want to cover.  Then blend it in and out with a big brush.  Have you ever done a winged liner?  It makes the eyes pop in photos and is pretty easy to do (my friend posted a tutorial video here).  I also recommend some sort of lip colour, even just a shade darker or brighter than your natural colour.

You have awesome skin!  Really I think you do a great job with your makeup.

I always use under-eye concealer (I just use Revlon Photo Finish in Ivory) to brighten the area a bit.  I also use that concealer all over for spots or whatever, but it doesn't look like you have a blemish or redness problem :)

I'd say go for a little pop of brightness on your cheeks!  If you live close to a Target, check out their ELF blushes (they're either $1 or $3 and really nice for the price) and go for a classic pink.  Always add a touch more blush than you think you need for pictures, because sometimes a flash can wash people out.  I also always wear a light application bronzing powder--not to make me look tan per se, just to keep my complexion from looking "flat"--I use NYC's Sunny bronzer, it's like $4.  I concentrate it on my forehead and a little on the apples of my cheeks.  I have a giant forehead and if I don't use bronzer it looks like a big billboard covered in foundation.

I'd go with a natural lip like the photo, it looks great on you.  Maybe even a tinted lip balm in a pinky-nude color.  Burt's Bees has some really nice ones, and the Revlon lip butters are very natural too  (I love the shade Berry Smoothie--it's just looks like you have a balm on but has a hint of color).

Overall for pictures, I personally use an extra coat of mascara & go a little bit heavier on my eyeliner.  I think with being blonde and having light eyebrows (which I have too) it helps make the eyes pop a bit.

I hope that helps!  Can't wait to see your family pics :)

  • I second everything PPs said.

I actually like to use 2 different concealers. I use Clinique's All About Eyes concealer under my eyes...I have crazy dark circles and I really feel that it brightens that area and it's super blendable. I use Clinique's Even Better concealer to cover up acne or whatever else is going on on my face. It's thicker and really provides full coverage. I don't use it under my eyes because it's not as blendable, it pretty much stays where you put it.

Bronzer under my cheekbones and on my jawline has been life changing. I'm super fair, so like Evan said, it doesn't make me look tan, but adds some dimension.

Finally, you can't go wrong with some brown eyeshadow. It's neutral, but will make your eyes pop : )

I definitely recommend going to any makeup counter or Sephora and asking them for help. You don't have to buy a ton, just focus on maybe a blush, concealer (if you need it), and some eyeshadow (you already have the mascara, so you're covered there)

  • Good idea about the eyeshadow @brainybrunette

We have similar coloring @WillyH, and this is eyeshadow palette is great for making blue eyes pop.  I have more expensive ones, but this is a classic that I go back to again and again.
