Audiobook recommendations

Can we have another one of these posts?  I'm listening to a book that would probably be decent in print, but the narrator sucks.   I don't mind being on hold for a month or two if it's really worth listening to on audio.  Recently, I've listened to and enjoyed:

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
The Raven Boys
The Dream Thieves
The Sky is Everywhere
Tell the Wolves I'm Home

  • Great list @packfan20

I'm currently listening to "Invention of Wings" and loving it! Also "Art of Racing in the Rain" and "Where'd You Go Bernadette" were both great on audio.
  • I can't remember if you read Madame Tussaud or not.  If not, listen to it on audio.  If so, listen to it on audio.

11/22/63 was fantastic as were Pope Joan and Mistress Shakespeare.

I can't tell you  how many times I've search me library for Madame Tussaud on audio!  Can you believe that the Boston library system doesn't have it?  Neither does my local on for that matter.

ETA: They don't have 11/22/63 either! WTF!

  • I know this isn't helpful, but I totally agree with @RevJen about Madame Tussuad. The audio is great.

I've been meaning to try Mistress Shakespeare too, I just haven't yet. Have you read the Kenzie and Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane? I thought they were fun to listen to and they are set in Boston!

  • I listened to Neil Patrick Harris: Choose your Own Autobiography this week. It was freaking amazing. Like laughing out loud like a lunatic while walking down the street in the middle of the day amazing. It was so good, I went out and bought the hard cover of it today so I could revisit it at my leisure. Also it is narrated by NPH so... :D

I've been wanting to read this, and the WhisperSync audio is quite inexpensive, but something about Luke Daniels' voice drives me nuts. :(

One of the things I love about Off to Be the Wizard is the voices he does.  It has some really geeky, silly moments and characters and he did them justice.  There's one blowhard wizard in particular that just had me in tears.  I've never laughed out loud more often while listening to an audiobook.  I must have been quite the sight at the park, running with my headphones on and cracking up.

I'd previously listened to 600 Hours of Edward which he had narrated, and I thought that was good, and that he was good, but I also think his voice was suited to the deadpan delivery of a character with Aspergers.  I can't imagine him narrating something with a straight delivery and not finding his voice grating, however.

Thanks for the follow up! Maybe I'll give it a try!

My previous experience was about a couple of engineers who were writing a computer program to prove the existence of God. I thought he was fine for the engineers, but one of the characters was a delinquent genius teenage girl, and his voice for her was so whiny that I wanted to throttle him! Not only was it grating to listen to, but I felt like it was kind of demeaning, since there's already a stereotype that smart or geeky girls are kind of annoying.
