The job market is a scary place!

I work for a mid sized hospitality company (we own three venues in Manhattan) that's not doing so well.  I've been working on getting my PHR certification and planning on looking for a new job in early 2015.  I'm currently looking for a part time hostess, and getting resumes from people with masters degrees, former managerial positions, and actual "career path" (banking, publishing, etc) jobs on their resumes!  I'm a little horrified at how overqualified half these applicants are.  Is the job market still that bad??
While I'm totally overwhelmed and under payed at my current position, this revelation makes me thankful for it, and also a bit nervous for my future!  I really hope my company stays afloat long enough for me to finish school and take this test!

Re: The job market is a scary place!

  • I think its completely normal to feel overwhelmed however just to make you feel a bit more at ease - the market has been a lot better than a few years ago. A lot of major companies still do lay offs and there are quite a number of overqualified candidates that apply to all types of jobs. However, the unemplyement rate is at its lowest and industries continue to hire and promote. I believe if you concentrate on your school,  taking the test and truly network with the industry you are interested in - you will not have any problems achieving your dream job! Best of luck to you :)

  • I definitely think it can be a scary place but despite that- there are good jobs to be had! I know for example my company is hiring a lot more this year than prior years and I think a lot of places are bouncing back.

It depends on the applicant though bc I do agree if you haven't worked for a while it is so much tougher to find a job and if you are already employed you have an advantage.
