QOTD 11/14

So I read an article this morning about a 21 year old who sued her parent to pay for her college tuition and won. They now have been ordered to pay $16k each per year.

What do you think about this?

Re: QOTD 11/14

  • If she left on her own, her parents shouldn't be responsible.  If her parents kicked her out, it seems like they're trying to abandon their responsibility.  In the article, the terms of her leaving are her said/she said.  This is very similar to the high school student in NJ last year who sued her parents for kicking her out.  What's going on in NJ?
  • I have a lot to say about that!
    1. that young woman should not have taken her parents to court the first time to pay for her schooling.  If someone is adult enough to move out of their parent's home they are adult enough to pay their own bills
    2. what judge thinks that ordering parents of an adult student to pay her tuition is a good and reasonable idea?!
    3. I think the grandparents pushed the girl into sueing her own parents

  • It's bullshit all around.

@sjs1013 - the NJ case was dropped. The girl moved back in with her parents.

  • There is a lot of information missing from this.  Did her parent's cosign on her student loans or something?  I don't understand how this is the parent's responsibility when she's over 18.  I just don't get this.  If they are going to make parent's legally responsible for their children's college tuition, then 18 should no longer be considered an adult.
  • There's no law obligating parents to pay college tuition, so there must be more to the story.  In fact, many states have lowered the age that child support obligations end from 22 to 18, so if you want post-secondary support from a non-custodial parent, you need to either get that in your divorce decree or have it in writing in some other form.

Also, and this is my professional, legal opinion: what a bi-atch.

    Just a bit ridiculous.
It's so weird how all the legal stuff works though when it comes to tuition. I tried applying for financial aid when I was in. And I got denied for something because I was still on speaking terms with my biological mother even though it was my grandparents (who I lived with since birth) who would be paying the bills.

  • @islandmonkey8‌ I remember the other girl moved back in with her parents and the case was dropped, but why do these girls think it's ok to sue their parents? That was what I meant by my question. I should have worded it differently. I know you're from NJ and you don't come across self entitled like these two girls. There are people like this from every state. I guess I hear about it because I live close to NJ, these cases are on my local news.
  • Um, that's ridiculous!! What's wrong with people these days?! I agree completely that if you're over 18, it's your responsibility. If you're lucky enough to have your parents contribute, then that's fantastic, but it's not something everyone is entitled to.
