WIJFR: Slaughterhouse Five

So, I've read this book several times. I read it in HS and absolutely hated it. Then I read it again as an adult and loved it. And I just finished it for the third time, I'm teaching it in my AP Lit class, and I loved it even more. I think what made it more impactful to me this time was my visit to Dresden, Germany this summer and my research into the realities of the Dresden bombing. This is just something we aren't taught about, so learning about it in Dresden and doing research over the past few months really drove home the importance of this book.

Anyway, I know it's weird as hell, but I really like it. And I think understanding the horrors of the Dresden bombing before you read helps to make it more meaningful.

If you do, read a bit about the Dresden bombing before you start it.

  • This is one of my favorite books ever.  I even have the t-shirt from Out of Print Books.  It's the perfect balance of weird and funny and deep and meaningful.

  • I read this in HS and hated it. I am probably due for a reread as a grownup.
