LR - Ladies with h/o D&C come on in...

Well, this weekend's attempt of taking care of residual tissue with Cytotec was a disappointment. I am now scheduled for a D&C this Thursday morning, and hoping so hard that this is the final chapter of this loss. I will be discussing what to expect for recovery with my OB on Thursday morning, but considering she told me that it's normal to bleed for 6 weeks straight, I'm not super confident in anything she has to say. I was curious to know if you ladies could share your experiences to help me mentally prepare for this. Specifically, I'm curious about the post-op pain and how much longer I should expect to bleed for once it's done.

Thank you all in advance!

My circumstances were a bit different than yours, but I'll share my experience:

I was in moderate pain for a couple days after my D&C. It wasn't excruciating but enough that I wanted to lie down most of the time.

I was very tired the following week. Could have been blood loss or the fact that I was very depressed. Maybe a combination of both.

Unfortunately, I did bleed for about 6 weeks. It wasn't awful, some days were just spotting, but it did last a while.

I'm so very sorry for your loss and that you are having to do all of this.

  • First of all, I'm sorry you're still having to deal with this. I hope the bleeding ends soon so you can continue the healing process.

My situation was different in that we waited nearly two weeks to naturally miscarry and it never happened. So I wasn't bleeding at all. I had the D&C on a Thursday, came home and slept (more out of mental exhaustion), and went back to work the next day. I had minor cramping and spotting that day. I had much heavier cramping two days later which went away with a heating pad. I never had any bleeding heavier than spotting and was essentially pain free after that day.

  • I'm sorry you are still dealing with this.

I'm not sure my experience with a D&C will be helpful to your situation, because mine was after an early loss. But I had a couple of days of Crampy, uncomfortableness afterward. I bled for just a couple days and then it was over.

I hope it all ends soon, so that you can just focus on the emotional feelings and not need to worry about the physical side of things too. ((Hugs))

  • I had heavy bleeding for two days, moderate for a few more, and spotting for weeks. Pain wise, hardly any after the third day. But I was mentally and physically drained for a couple weeks.

I'm sorry the meds didn't work. ((hugs))

  • I only bled for a couple days and then spotting for the first two weeks after surgery consistently and randomly for the next two. I had a lot of cramps feelings for a few days but luckily that was mostly over by the end of the first week.

I took off the rest of this week, so I'm hoping, at the very least, to over the cramping by Monday. More than anything, I just hope she gets it all the first time. Thanks again.

    I'm so sorry :(

I wanted to chime in to say that after mine I had no cramping/pain, and bled less than a normal period so it really does vary. I had it on a Wed and took the rest of the week but it was more for emotional recovery than physical...
    Thinking of you.

  • I had a D&E with the triplets. I went in at 1 for pre-admission testing and crap, went back for surgery around 330, and was home by 530. I had heavy bleeding for 2-3 days and then it was spotting for maybe another week. I got a few huge (think lemon-sized) clots, but I knew it was normal and it went away once I started sitting and relaxing. Cramping wasn't too bad and I only had to take ibuprofen once or twice.

Surgery was Sept. 25th and I still haven't gotten a period. I'm currently on Provera to induce a bleed and hopefully reset my body.

Physically it was easy, easier than a period. Emotionally? I'm still recovering. I'm depressed and I need to ask for a counseling referral when I go in for my next post-op check up.

I am really sorry you have to go through this. Please feel free to reach out to me through here or Facebook.

Thanks, @Ewenice83‌ ... So sorry for the loss of your triplets and that you're still waiting on AF. I hope you're able to find a good counselor to help you emotionally.

I was offered a D&E, but I decided to induce delivery. I had hoped by doing that I would forgo having to have the surgery (among other reasons), but clearly I was wrong. Hopefully, this is it...

  • I'm glad I went with the D&E. I've been through enough emotionally. I didn't want to be awake for the procedure.

I hope things go well on Thursday and you can start to move forward and recover.
