Question for those who have done IUI

Just curious...did you have a sonogram right before your IUI or the day afterwards to confirm ovulation?

On my previous IUIs with a different RE, I had mid-cycle sonograms to see how I was progressing, then once they determined I was mature via sonogram and regular blood draws, I'd do the trigger shot, then when I went in for IUI, they'd do a sono immediately after the IUI, then I'd come back the next day for a sono to confirm follicle collapse and do bw. Every time, this was the routine.

Now I'm with a new RE/clinic. I had the baseline sono, of course, then had my mid-cycle sono on Saturday and had an 18mm follicle so I did the trigger on Sunday as directed. I went in for IUI on Monday but they didn't do any kind of sonogram before/after or schedule anything afterwards. The only thing I have on the books is that I go for a progesterone draw on Friday (which will also be my first bw at ALL with this clinic). Is that normal? He said everything looked perfect when he was doing the IUI, but I thought it was weird that he didn't do any kind of sonogram. I don't know if my former RE was just sonogram happy, but I was kinda confused because I've never had so few tests. Is that the norm and I was just spoiled (expensively spoiled) by the old RE?

I like this new RE and he has great reviews (was rated a "Top Doc" in the area) but it's so vastly different than my old clinic. They pride themselves on only doing what is necessary to avoid excessive costs, so I'm sure that's a large part of it, just wondering if it's the norm :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

Re: Question for those who have done IUI

  • I didn't have any sonograms to prove ovulation, just the monitoring appointments and then the trigger shot.

I've got my crossables crossed so hard for you :)

First, good luck! I'm so excited for you!!

As for your question,I never did. I had my baseline and then monitoring. Once I was given the OK to trigger, that was it. No more ultrasounds before or after IUI. My next appointment after IUI was the beta, not even a progesterone draw.

ETA: Same for my TI cycles...baseline, monitoring, trigger, beta.

  • Crazy! I guess I was just spoiled at the old clinic! :) Now I know it's normal to NOT have those. I'm certainly not complaining because this cycle has been quite "cheap" due to the lack of what I guess is excessive monitoring. Thanks, ladies!  And thanks for all the crossed crossables :)

@brij2006 - The soonest I will test is next Thursday night, so 11dpo. I'll probably wait until Friday morning (12 dpo) though. Normally I would start to test sooner, but I will be on business travel and I don't want to do it without DH in case it's positive...or in case it's negative.. :)

  • I never did. But looking back, I don't think I was at a great clinic.
IUI - BFP! Baby boy born still - August 2012
    IVF - BFP - miscarriage June 2013
    FET - BFN
    FET - BFN

IVF with PGD - three embryos created, all healthy - July 2014
FET - transferred two embryos (boy and girl) - Nov 2014 - BFP!
    Baby Boy born July 2015

  • Wishing you lots of luck! I never had any monitoring after the IuI. I asked once and the nurse told me there was no reason to think I didn't ovulate- that's what the trigger does. I said ok and never asked again.
