I think I might be getting an interview on Monday and I'm terrified/excited. I've never been on a formal interview, I've been at my job for 12 years.
Ask questions!  One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone doesn't ask questions in an interview.

  • Should I wait until there is a second interview to ask questions about benefits/telecommuting etc? I have a few questions about the company and department, but I don't want to seem presumptuous with the benefits.

I wouldn't ask about benefits until the offer (MAYBE the second interview, depending on how things go).  If they are really interested in you, it might just come up naturally in conversation.  You can always ask about benefits and telecommuting at the time of the offer and say that it will help you get an idea of total compensation before you make an informed decision.

  • Thanks! It's a big part of why I want to leave (the benefits), the telecommuting would be nice because I would have an hour commute.

I agree with this. During the initial interview, I would ask questions geared toward the work itself. Show that you are looking to see how you can benefit the company, not how you can benefit from it. KWIM?

    Yep! That makes total sense.

  • Yesterday was my last class day, and I left my grade book IN the classroom. Didn't even realize it until last night when I sat down to grade projects. Flipped out. I sent the chair of the department, departmental secretary, and my office neighbor an email pleading with them to look today and stick it in my office for me and I got a reply immediately from the chair that she was still there and she'd pop over right then to look for it.  She was still on campus at 10:45pm!! Bless her! She found it, and I am saved. That thing is my life for that class because no one ever taught me how to use the Moodle system to keep my grades. I was so freaked out.

  • I have almost always had shoulder-length brown hair, with either high or low lights. Yesterday I had two colors added to it and chopped it off to a short bob, barely chin length. Something about being out of grad school and having a job I love (finally!) has really brought a lot of excitement to my life and this is my totally vain and lame way of showing that.

  • What kinds of questions should someone be asking in an interview? I can never come up with any unless something just comes up naturally in conversation.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

I would ask what the interviewer likes about working for the company. This can be very telling about the culture of the company.

I would also ask what a typical day in the job looks like.

And, where does the interviewer see the company going in 5 or 10 years.

Research the company online.  Look for articles and/or financial statements & read the FS notes.  Ask questions about anything you've read.
