2nd grade kid's reading log and audio books

Do you think it's legit to include audiobooks on a reading log for a 2nd grader? I know they listen to audiobooks at school (as an option in the reading centers), but I think they look at the printed words at the same time as listening. What do you think? I should ask the teacher, I know, but I feel like a doofus doing so, because I know some non-readers don't consider audiobooks to "count" as reading. (Which I wholeheartedly disagree with!)

And in case you're wondering, the kid reads paper books a ton. But we've had a couple of car trips recently where we've popped in a Magic Tree House audiobook, and he's really enjoying them.

  • I would ask the teacher how they want it recorded.  I do count the time that I read to Gavin on his reading log though.  He reads on his own a ton, but there are lots of times that I read to him and Molly still.

On a side note, what books is your 2nd grader into?  Mine loves the Magic Tree House books also. I'm always looking for new ideas for Gavin! :)

  • When it comes to young kids and school reading, I'd say that audiobooks shouldn't be counted. I am assuming they are keeping to log to help them learn to become better readers. I think having them actually read the book would help more with that.

When it comes to me? I always count audiobooks towards my total. It usually counts for at least half my yearly total. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't have one going.
