Bfing moms, I have a question or 100

This is my first day back to work. Do you pump a certain time or until empty? At home I did until empty, but that was like 20 mins. I'm on 30 here and still going.

(more questions may follow!)

  • I've got nothing, but good luck on your first day back at work.
  • I pump for 20 minutes. I usually feel at least a large sense of relief by that point. If I'm still full on one side, I will continue on just that side for about 5 more minutes.

I find it helps to be very relaxed while pumping. At home, you are in a familiar environment with your baby nearby. At work, it's likely a whole new place.  Look at pictures of E, watch videos, do little things to take your mind off what you are doing. I usually browse FB or read.

Hang in there, mama! You will be a pro in no time! Thinking of you on your first day back, I'm always here if you want to talk about it :)

  • Thanks @goatlady12! I've been locked out of my accounts all morning so it's been pretty uneventful. I finally got on now, 555 emails to go through. I miss E but I've been ok. I think it will hit me more when we get back from Christmas break. Right now I just have to get through 2 weeks and 2 days Haha.

@willyh19 - I don't feel full, just can hear some coming out. I just stopped at 30 mins. I know my boobs overachieve in the morning, so hopefully this last session doesn't take as long (but she has enough milk for tomorrow).

I've been on here, fb, and watching the videos I've taken of her. Mom has been sending me some all day too. She seems to be doing good for them. Tomorrow I'll remember my nook to read!

  • @ramstein1027‌ I laughed out loud and O looked at me like I was crazy.

@mana8503‌ I pump until empty, usually between 10 and 15 minutes. I had a huge supply dip when I went back that hasn't really recovered. I am not relaxed at work when I pump no matter how hard I try. I go on her or Facebook while pumping to distract myself, but I always feel like I'm rushing and watching the clock to be on time.

On this note, I forgot how much wearing pants for 10 hours SUCKS!

Thanks for the laughs all! I needed it

  • @sjs1013 when i returned to work my supply dipped too, unfortunately even though I was able to pump in my office, people were constantly knocking, the phone would ring, and I too felt like i was rushed and I couldnt relax. I was too stressed and eventually switched to formula which i regret but I needed to do what was right for my sanity...i hope your supply recovers!

  • @mana8503 has today been better? Has your Nook helped?

  • It's better, thanks for asking. I haven't read yet since parents and Jeff are with E so I'm talking to them and they are sending pictures. I miss her more today. I'll probably read during the last session since that's everyone's nap time. And I'm slowly getting more comfortable being half naked at work.

I learned a lesson yesterday I need 6 bottles since I pump into those and shouldn't mix warm with cold milk. I had bags to pour the 11 am milk into.

Random - does one boob for better than the other? My left is a champ and almost doubles the right.

Are you pumping more in one session than you can fit in one bottle? My first pump at work I usually get around 8 ounces and put in two bottles, but my supply is less later in the day and can combine into one bottle. I have combined warm with cold, did someone tell you you shouldn't do that?

Yes, my left is a champ and always produced much more than my right.

ETA - I'm so glad today is going better! It definitely gets easier the more you do it. I've been pumping at work now for 3 months. It sucks, but is soooo worth it!

  • I've been getting 7, 5 and 3. So first session I have 2 bottles, 5 and 2. Then I combine the second and when I get home combine the 2 oz from the morning with the 3 from the afternoon when they are both cold. Kellymom said not to mix. I guess pumping into the cold one warms it back up and it said that's a no no. Idk I was doing that when I was home before I ordered more storage bottles.

Haha when I was home I just thought she wasn't getting as much out of the left but now I just think it's an over achiever. Glad I'm not alone.

I know it'll worth it, just something to get used to.

  • My right used to be the champ, then I balanced out for a few weeks. Now left is the champ.

@mpjf1001‌ thanks! I hope it gets better. I don't want to switch to formula. I keep trying to stick to a better schedule, but it's hard. I may need to start supplementing to make sure O has enough to eat. I want to go until February, but I'm not sure that will happen.
  • My left always produced more than the right.

  • @sjs1013 - do you get a Christmas break? Hopefully after feeding your LO all day and adding some pumping your supply will go back. I do notice a little difference after eating my lactation brownies. Yesterday I only got 3 oz my last pump and I got 4.5 post brownie.

  • @mana8503 I do have a Christmas break.  I can't wait to be home and snuggle with my girl!  I think I am going to continue to pump though.  On weekends I pump and she gets bottles.  O only nurses before bed and for MOTN feedings.
  • @sjs1013 I think you would be surprised how much it would help your supply to nurse as much as you can when you are with O. It helps to drain your breasts properly and allow them to get the signal to make more milk.

  • @WillyH19‌ thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try this weekend.
