Progesterone level after IUI question...

So I had my IUI last Monday on CD 14. I went for a progesterone draw on Friday, CD 18 or 4 DPO. I just called to get the results and talked to the nurse. She said my level came back at 5.0 "but the RE likes to see the number higher than that." So I asked if I needed to take progesterone suppositories or what, assuming that would be the case, esp since I took prog suppositories after IUI on my other cycles at the old clinic. She said no, just to call them when I get a bfp or I unfortunately get AF and am ready to start the next cycle.

Does 5.0 seem low to anyone else or is that ok for only 3/4 DPO? I find mixed answers online as to what the level should be. A lot of what I find says they usually test at 7/8dpo anyway, so I was tested due to leaving town.  I am all paranoid that this won't work and I should've pushed for progesterone, just in case. At this point, I'd have to go get something over the counter anyway (if that stuff even really works) because I'm leaving town in the morning and wouldn't have time to get anything in the mail until Thursday night/Friday morning.

@islandmonkey8 - I could, but I can't get them until Friday morning or maybe late Thursday night and by then, I'll possibly either have a bfn or bfp anyway and have an answer

:( Are you somewhere they can't just call it it locally near you? I'm sure it's ok if your doctor isn't worried.

  • The B Complex vitamin is supposed to help with progesterone.  You can pick that up anywhere, but I'm not sure if it helps as much if you start taking it further past O.  I had taken it for my entire cycle when using it.

  • Hi RAB, you may or may not remember me because I haven't been present on here in awhile. However I often lurk, and see how the TTTC crowd is doing. I saw your post and wanted to share my results of Progesterone levels after just a round of low-dose Clomid, mostly because my numbers were very similar to yours from the start of that cycle.

    At 6DPO (9/9/11) my Progesterone was 3.8
At 12DPO (9/15/11) my Progesterone was 8.0 I also found out that day I was in fact pregnant and my RE started me on Progesterone supplements that day. I was on 200mg twice a day. On 9/19/11 my level was at 16.8. My levels were tested every other week and towards the end of October they dipped to 14.9 and 14.6 and my doctor upped the supplements to 3X/day. I was able to stop taking the progesterone supplements in November as I moved further into my 2nd trimester.

With all of that said, for a medicated cycle they generally want the levels over 10 or 15 if not higher. It is entirely possible to be pregnant with a level like yours, when you get a BFP they will want to check it along with the HCG. If the progesterone level isn't high enough for your doctors standards they will put you on supplements.

So to answer your original question, there isn't much you can do. Sit tight? Test for a BFP often? Call your doctor immediately when you see a hint of a line. I wondered if supplements would have prevented my CP the cycle before the one I found out I was pg with Sophia, but I have come to realize it wouldn't have done anything in truth. There were many tears shed when my doctor told me they wouldn't prescribe supplements until they had a + blood test stating I was pregnant. I'm pretty sure my vent about it is somewhere in the archives.

But... the supplements worked and I finally got my take home baby.
I wish you all the best and have my fingers crossed for a BFP!

I just looked at my numbers, and with my last m/c my progesterone was at a 41.1 at my first beta, with my bfp, my first was at 8, and rose to 12.5 at my next draw. My RE started me on progesterone supositories, twice a day through first tri. With that said, a low level early on isn't indicative of a negative outcome, whereas a high level also isn't indicative of a positive outcome. Just remember, a rising number with hcg is what you want to see, and you can always get a supplement to work with the progesterone. Lots of hugs to you, and I hope your work trip helps to take your mind off of things for a couple days, and you get a + test on Friday. <3
