Help- what is the new "it" book for teens? (and boys)

I want to add a book to my nephews gifts, but I have no idea what to get.
In past I've done all the HP's, Hunger Games, Divergent and Maze Runners.

I have no idea where to go with a book this year. He is 17.  I know he read some fantasy series (had dragons on the cover?)
I'm thinking maybe I should introduce him to LOTR?  
But is there any other "IT" series I should be looking at?

    What about The Hobbit to tie into the third movie release? Did he read Eragon yet? Maybe Terry Pratchett's discworld series? Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Asimov's Robots series.

    He sounds like his tastes are similar to Luke's :)

    You could try Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series or Jim Butcher's urban fantasy series.

    His Dad is actually an SK fan and has all his books.  So when he is ready to start SK they are already there.

    If he's 17, he probably reads adult instead of YA. I really enjoyed C. Robert Cargill's books "Dreams and Shadows" and "Queen of the Dark Things."

    Or what about "Red Rising"? I found it a little too violent, but I'm not a 17-year-old boy. :)

    Quite true! But I've noticed that many high schoolers in my region aren't reading YA. My readership is mostly middle-schoolers (ages12-14) and adults who love YA/NA. There's not a ton in between--or at least that's how it seems at signings. Someone once told me that teens like to "read up" when it comes to the ages of book protagonists. I wonder if that's a factor in what I'm seeing.

    My H's favorite books in high school were the Conan the Barbarian novels written by Robert Jordan (there are other Conan authors, but RJ writes the best Conan).  He also began The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan in high school (a 14 book series plus 1 prequel).  To this day, after reading mountains of other books, these two series by Robert Jordan remain among my husband's absolute favorites.

    In high school, I was reading The Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, and then I got onto the Dirk Pitt series of novels by Clive Cussler. These are both excellent choices for boys, as well, and they are extremely entertaining reads.
