I woke up at 2:00 am on Tuesday 12/9 to go to the bathroom and I suspected that my water had broken. It took about a half hour before I was certain that my water had broken. It didn't fully break it had just started to leak. DH and I got to the hospital at around 3-330 am and it was confirmed that indeed my water had broken and I was dilated to a 2. She put me on the monitor and saw I was having contractions every four minutes. I swear I felt nothing for the first hour I was there. They gave me some time and then I think around 930 or 10 they hooked me up to pitocin because my contractions were not consistent enough and I was only at a three.
The 7-3 nurse was probably one of my least favorite people ever. She checked me at 9 am and then watched my contractions and kept turning up my pitocin. She never checked me a second time. When I asked about an epidural she said that they couldn't give me one because they didn't want to give it too soon and have it not strong enough when I pushed. This answer would have been ok, but at 2pm I'd been on pitocin for like 4-5 hours and not been checked for dilation since 9 so how the F can you say I'm not far enough along when you haven't checked my progress? And they were well aware that I was having back labor. PS, people aren't messing around, back labor is awful! Anyway, all this woman would do was give me a small dose of femerol (which did nothing) and kept talking to me like I was a child. She did finally run blood tests at the end of her shift that are required before the epidural, so I started to feel hopeful.
The new nurse came in at about 330-4. She asked when the last time I was checked and when I told her that was at 9am, she was pretty shocked and checked me immediately. I was between a 4 and 5. Then there was a bomb threat at the hospital and we were in lock down in our room. That was kind of crazy but luckily was just a threat. She was in the room with us and finally informed me that the reason I was not given an epidural was that they could tell by my contraction pattern and back labor that baby was sunny side up and they wanted him to spin face down. She turned down the pitocin and started working with me on a ball to get him to spin. This pissed me off a lot since the nurse before did nothing and just kept lying telling me that I couldn't have one so soon. But thankfully, now I had a good nurse.
From this point on I have no idea what the actual time was. Anyway, I was on the ball a while, then she gave me a higher dose of femerol and let me rest for 45 minutes. It took the edge off for a short time but not long. I was at a 6 and she had me get back on the ball, that wasn't helping so she had me try on my hands and knees. Gave me another dose of femerol which did nothing and at his point I was in blinding pain and people on the next floor could probably hear me laboring. Finally I felt a normal contraction that wasn't all in the back. She confirmed that my contractions looked like he finally turned, she told me the epidural was on the way. She checked again and I was at 8.
I finally got my epidural about 8pm-ish, and as it was kicking in I started feeling like I was about to poop. The pain was finally gone from the epidural but the pressure was super intense. So she checked and told me that she needed to not push because she needed to call my doctor. I then had to fight the urge to push and wait for my doctor to get there. Thank god I had the epidural at this point, because I don't think after all those hours, of back labor, I could have handled that.
My doctor got there and they immediately had me start pushing. I pushed for about 45 minutes and Alexander John was born at 9:51, weighing in at 7lbs 13oz and 21 inches long with a full head of hair! Labor was rough, but he was worth every second of it! We came home today!
Re: Birth Story
