Crib Cost

If you don't mind answering, please share how much you spent on the crib.  I'm in love with this crib but the cost is freaking me out a bit.  It does have the conversion kits available for purchase, so at least we'd be able to use it for several years down the road.  I'm just not in love with any other crib that I've seen and I think this one would be perfect for our little girl.  Am I crazy to spend that much on a crib?

Re: Crib Cost

  • We spent $150 both times. I can't fathom spending much more. The kids chew on the railing. Most people I know skipped converting the crib and went straight to a twin bed. We will convert though when the time comes

  • Ours is a convertible from BRU for $270. We will be purchasing the conversion kit and toddler rails.

@carcrashheart‌ - Have you thought about the rail covers to prevent the chew marks? My mom made some fleece ones that just tied on for my nephews.
  • We bought ours from Target.  It came with the conversion kit.  If we use it fine, if not no big deal because it came with it.  Regular price is $379 but we had various coupons and caught a sale so we paid a bit less than that.

  • I have rail covers but it was too late when I got them. It didn't make me want to spend more than $150 for #2.

  • I wouldn't have to worry about chew marks with this crib because it's cast iron. I got a great deal on the dresser and chair I plan on using in the nursery today, so I'm kinda justifying spending a little extra on the crib because of that. It's just double what I was planning on spending so I'm having a hard time totally convincing myself.

  • The crib I am pretty sure we are getting is $279 from BRU and comes with part of the conversion kit.
The one DH loves is $399 but the conversion kit on top of that is an extra $300 dollars total. We will probably end up with the BRU one because I won't spend more than $400 on the crib alone.

  • Ours was around $200 and it came with a mattress. For us, we didn't have the budget for much more, but I really love our crib, and if we use it as a toddler bed, great, if we end up getting a twin, then we didn't spend a lot on the crib, so it's not a huge deal.

I think our crib was about $400. I didn't want one that expensive, but the first one we found got discontinued, and I didn't like any of the others in the original lower price range. Thankfully, my SM bought our crib, so we'll just have the buy the conversion kits for it when the time comes.

I could not bring myself to spend $600 on a crib. Even with getting the rest of the our nursery furniture either free (already had/passed on by friends) or super cheap (rehabbed a $50 dresser).

ETA: But if you LOVE it, you love it! Really up to you and if it will work in your budget. :)

  • We spent $25 on our crib and bought it 2nd hand.  So I probably don't count.

My thoughts were that I would rather spend the extra money on a good car seat that is used for safety.  So I made sure this crib was up to code and had good reviews, and bought it.  The toddler rail came with it, and we figure that if our child chews on it like crazy then we can toss it when we're done and we're not out a lot.

  • Thanks for your input ladies.  I normally don't overspend on things and try to save money where ever possible, so that also plays into me questioning this purchase.  Luckily, I just looked at our rewards program with our credit card and I'm able to get Amazon gift cards, and I'll have enough points in the next month or so to get it.  I just know that if I go with another crib, I'll regret not going with the one that I really want.

Just a bit of advice, I would buy the conversion kit ahead of time. Because my SIL bought a crib 4 years ago and the crib is discontinued and they don't sell the conversion kit anymore.
BuyBuy Baby suggested we buy the kit no matter once we find a crib and store it.

  • If you can swing the cost, go for it.  Be sure to get rail covers, though, because you don't want your kid chewing on cast iron.

I think ours was $199? not counting the mattress?

I was planning to. I need to remember to do it. Finding a place to store it will be an issue for us (since we have no storage for anything outside of your regular closets), but I know we're way safer getting it now than waiting!

  • About $150 for each on amazon. They convert if we want to go that route.  I can't imagine spending much more on a piece of furnature that gets beat up and you only have for a few years.
