Background: DH and I are terrible at gift-giving occasions. birthdays, Christmas, whatever, gifts usually don't even get wrapped, and they almost never go un-gifted until the actual occasion.

So DH bought and wrapped, and I opened, my Christmas present today, all by about 1:30pm. He got me a Kitchenaid stand mixer! I am in love. What should I bake first?

  • Thanks for the recipes, GABride! I may try the rolls, those sound amazing.

So, I decided to make snickerdoodles last night as thanks to DH because they're his favorite. A very strange thing happened.

The recipe I use requires the dough to be refrigerated for half an hour, so I put the bowl of dough in the fridge. After the half hour was up, when I went to roll the dough into balls, I noticed that all the dough that was touching the (stainless steel) bowl was dark grey. Ew. Obviously, we had washed the bowl before I used it, and I checked the manual and the internet for any fixes, prevention, or indication that this was a known issue. Nothing. I'm going to call customer service when they open on Monday, but we had to throw away a bunch of cookie dough (actually, a friend of ours came over for cookies and decided to eat the mysteriously grey dough). I did get to make about half a recipe out of the dough that wasn't gross, at least...

@Sewilson33 @FutureMrsWright2012@GABride2010 and anyone else with a KA mixer with the metal bowl, have you ever heard of this? I'm so confused.

  • I have a KA mixer with the metal bowl, and never had that happen.  Curious to see what their customer service says about it.
  • That is weird. My KA bowl is also metal and has never discolored anything I've made. I'd wonder if it was an ingredient in the dough that did it?

  • My metal bowl has never done that before. That is definitely strange! I have the KA glass bowl too, and I love it.

I thought about that, but it's a pretty standard list of ingredients so I hope not... flour, baking powder, butter, sugar, salt, egg, vanilla, some milk, and cinnamon.

  • I'm with the rest of the ladies... Never happened to me before either.... Although I can't remember if I've ever put it in the fridge before.

  • I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't love her KA :(  I find it clunky and hate that the paddles never reach all parts of the bowl.

I've never had my metal bowl discolour anything though!  I'm interested to hear what they have to say.

Two things to fix the paddle bowl problem: 1. In the manual there are directions on how to adjust the paddle height when you get it so the paddle just pushes around a dime. 2. Bed Bath and Beyond and some other places sell a paddle with a rubber edge added on that will actually scrape the sides of the bowl continuously.

oOooh, I like this! I believe mine is set right, but I still feel the need to scrape the top stuff down occasionally. This sounds amazing.

  • So I called KA. They said they use a stainless steel polishing cream in the factory and some people find it doesn't come off with soap and/or in the dishwasher, so they find it on/in their food. This is not mentioned in the manual, however, which I find more than a little bit annoying, especially because it's so easy to fix. They said scrubbing with a baking soda/water paste should remove it completely, or using barkeeper's friend.

Weird! I've never heard that before! I'm happy it's an easy fix though!

I also saw the paddle with the rubber scraper at Target last week.  I have one, too, it's great!
