Have we talked about Rainbow Rowell's new book?

Did you see that Rainbow Rowell's next book is Carry On about Simon and Baz?

I feel like the ultimate debbie downer lately, but I'm not excited for this. The fanfic in Fangirl was my least favorite parts of the book and I'm not quite sold on an entire book about it. I have until October to change my mind!

Re: Have we talked about Rainbow Rowell's new book?

  • Hmm. I didn't care for the fanfic in Fangirl, either. So when I heard this, I was less than excited. However, I love RR, and her description of the book in the above link intrigued me. I hope she pulls this off!

  • Yeah, I was less than excited about this, too. I have no doubt she can pull it off, but my big question is...WHY?

  • I don't get it either. Why write a fake fanfiction that feels weirdly like actual fanfiction? I guess that is the point that maybe I am missing. The whole thing is just weird to me.

  • Huh. I loved Fangirl but was not a fan of the fanfic. I am not sure how to feel about this.

  • She alluded to this during her book signing.  I wasn't thrilled.

  • Team not excited.  I loved Fangirl but skimmed most of the fanfic parts.

  • I love the breeze that keeps Rainbow Rowell cool...but I'm not overly thrilled about this either. I'm thinking there's a fanbase for this that is thrilled and I personally believe she is able to write anything, but I don't really care enough about the fanfic story in Fangirl to throw my panties at this idea.

  • From what I gathered at her signing she seems to be a huge fan of fan fic (go figure).   I am sure that is why she thinks this is a good idea.

She will still be adorable, even if I don't want to read the book.

  • Ugh. Not for me.

  • I'm a little excited. I wasn't really into the fanfic aspect, but I actually really enjoyed the Simon & Baz romance itself. I wish she would just write this story in its own setting instead of using this meta fanfic concept.

  • @booneybear‌ she tweets about fanfic a lot and I do think she has a target audience that will be really into this. I just don't happen to be part of it.

@GilliC‌ I think the meta fanfic concept is a big part of what's giving me pause, but I didn't get into Simon and Baz's story either so I have that going against it too.

I don't doubt she will write a great fantasy novel, I'm just not sold on this one yet.

  • I definitely think she has an audience in hard core fanfic readers - the girls in my book club are ALL ABOUT fanfic and are super excited for this one.  I'll read it and probably like it, but I'm not as pumped as I was for Landline.
