  • My purple and silver tree.

Bought it at a garage sale for $5 about 5 years ago.  It's only 7.5 ft tall, and our ceilings are 12.  One of these years I will get an 11 foot real tree.

My first live tree (at DH's request).  It is about 7.5 feet and crooked and we couldn't get it straight...
I've always had a live tree, it's the best way to do it :) My family's Christmas tree farm used to sell a tree stand with a swivel mechanism to help get the tree straight, they don't sell it anymore, but I bet you could find something similar on amazon.

My parent actually brought up their old stand that swivels and does other stuff to help keep it straight.  They did a live tree when my sister and I were babies and for some reason kept the stand even after they switched to artificial.

We haven't had a chance to check it out but I'm hoping it will work for next year.  We fought getting this tree up and even relatively straight.
I remember the stands being a big seller...I think my family just stopped selling them because people were able to get the same stand other places for cheaper, it just wasn't economical for them to keep selling them.

  • I love all of these pictures!  Does anybody have a link to an easy way to post pictures?  It was so much simpler on TK!
  • when you hit the reply button "attach a file" is right under the box and you can upload photos from your computer.

  • Wow do I feel like a doofus! That's super easy. I thought you needed a URL for it or something!

Here's our tree. Real all the way! No topper this year because it has been quite tipsy. We need a better stand for next year.

If it's a pre-lit tree, you may have a fuse blown on the strand that's out. Just figure out which strand it is that's broken, and at the plug, there is this tiny "door." It migh tneed to be be opened with a butter knife. There are typically 2 fuses on each strand, so in the light replacement baggies that may have come with your tree, those little metal and glass tubes are the fuses. Remove the old ones (again, with a butter knife tip) and put in the new ones.

If this doesn't light the strand that's out, then since lights of this type are strung in a series, it's possible that you have too many burnt out bulbs for the whole strand to work. These stands can usually remain lit even if a few lights are burnt, but if more that a few are out, then the electrical current doesn't flow through the strand and the whole strand goes out. To fix this, you need replacement bulbs, which you can buy at Amazon. And, you need a place to test each of the lights in the strand.

Admittedly, either "fix" is time consuming, but it's cheaper than replacing an entire pre-lit tree.

IF you decide to replace the tree, try Treetopia.com they are having a 60% off sale right now. All their trees come with a 5 year guarantee.

Yes we were thinking after christmas is the time to buy them.  The strand that is burnt out - all the light bulbs are a little black looking.  We will try fixing it one more time when we take it down after new years.  This tree was bought in 2006.

  • Here is my son helping with the Christmas tree.  It is a partial Dilbert tree since we don't take lights down and it is artificial, we do take off the ornaments since some of them are very fragile and come from Europe.  I will be replacing the lights, at least the bottom string since it wasn't working this year.

I think my white and blue ornaments from the Netherlands are very similar to one I spot on your tree!
