Options (long)

Maybe typing this out will help my anxiety.  What are your thoughts?

So as you know, my job is up for cuts. We still don't know anything about that situation.  We do know that 3 FTE positions will be cut by April 7.  All P's in the buildings are making the decision.  Had you asked me last year if it was the same scenario, I wouldn't of panicked.  My P and I got along.  Then this year hit.  BOOM....who knows what happened.  We can't stand each other.  I know I have posted about it before and some of you said that it might look like she will want to get rid of me. Well I talked with a girl that got let go last year and the things that were said on her evaluation, are the same as mine.  Change body language, tone of voice, not a team player, ect. Well I got a local therapist job on the side and it will be a busy spring for me working 60 hours, but I have my foot in the door.

Option 1- Stay at my current school.  I am not sure if this is going to be an option if she lets me go.

Option 2- Go to the middle school. They don't have a real counselor and the P and I love each other. I would think that she would take me in a heartbeat as she wanted me last year. But I run the risk of losing my stipend ($300.00/month).   We don't know about the stipend yet.  Same group of counselors that I would have to work with. I don't love them but I don't hate them. I haven't talked to P about this as I am not sure how to broach the subject. I don't want to leave on a bad note or have the team mad that I got mad of the fake counselor over there.

The school has good insurance and I make about $38,000.

Option 3- Go full time for the therapist job.  $40,000 but I have to work year round. I couldn't get my summers off.  The insurance is decent, but the retirement isn't as good as the school option.

Option 4- go to J's school district. Same retirement, $40,000 but almost no insurance. So I feel like I can't go here, since I need insurance for obvious reasons.

I thought maybe the school would hold me on since I am paid through Aug 1.  But I called insurance and they said they go off of the date the school tells them to terminate me. She suggested I talk to HR, but I am not ready to tell her yet. I know legally she has to stay quiet, but I don't trust her.

Sigh...now I am lost.

Re: Options (long)

  • Wow lots of options is a good thing until you have to choose. I say to pick an option with insurance so 1-3. From those I would say pick between 2 and 3. If you pick option 2 is the salary listed without your stipend? Would you be okay with that? Or would you want/need the extra $2000 from option 3?

  • The MS job is a salary position with a stipend.  That would equal about $38.000. but I can walk to work since it is down the street.  I just feel like it isn't fair to ask me to do the same amount of work for $300.00 less a month.  Is it doable? Yes, but not ideal of course.
  • Another positive to staying where I am or moving to the MS is that I get to keep my 20 days of PTO. If I leave, I would lose it. I assume that as a FTM, I would need it.

I would probably lean towards moving to the middle school if I were in your shoes. It seems like the best option, in my opinion.

  • Yeah I would pick an option to keep your PTO.

  • It seems like the middle school is a good choice. Especially since you said you get along with the P and she wanted you. This way you can keep summers off.

  • I'd go for the MS. Yes, it does pay less, but I think the benefits and the summers off would be a benefit enough to take the pay cut.

    Good luck though.
