Re: Favorite Book of 2014

  • That's so hard to pick one! I guess I will go with Blue Lily, Lily Blue. But the top five would also include (in no particular order):
    The Martian
    Murder of Crows
    The Lies of Locke Lamora
A Breathe of Snow and Ashes (still catching up on this series)

  • Best book of 2014 would have to be Ready Player One.  I have a lot of 4 star books, but very few 5 star books for the year!
I also really enjoyed Halfway to the Sky which was a reread and is basically a children's book.  But it's about the Appalachian Trail, so I always get the urge to take a hike when I read it!

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
    "I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

  • It is too hard to pick just one!
I only had two 5 stars books for the year:
    Mean Streak
    Attachments

    These were all 4.5 stars:
    The Martian
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
    Sister
    Flat-Out Celeste
    Defending Jacob
    The Winter People
    Breakable
    The Peach Keeper
    Archer's Voice
    The Midwife's Confession
    Flat-Out Love
    Fangirl

  • Hm. The whole Cinder series was great. Landline. Mean Streak. Big Little Lies. I can't choose just one obviously!

  • Very hard to choose.  In no particular order, the ones I enjoyed the most were:

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
    14 by Peter Clines
    Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
    Lock In by John Scalzi
The Android's Dream by John Scalzi
Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi
Off to be the Wizard by Scott Meyer
  • I'll answer both questions...

The best book I read this year was Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I think every American should read it, because the way the government dealt with the native population really could be called a genocide. Heartbreaking stuff.

My favorite book I read (excluding re-reads of old favorites) was Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I love xenoanthropology in science fiction, and this novel was also an interesting blend of philosophy, religion, and adventure.

  • I did a lot of re-reading this year, but the book that instantly popped into my head was One Lavender Ribbon by Heather Burch. It's not the highest rated book that I read this year, but I still think of it a lot. The first 3/4 of the book were amazing, but the last chunk wasn't as good, and neither was the ending. Still, it sucked me in and I enjoyed it.
