progesterone withdrawal test question

hello ladies!

I'm a frequent lurker here...H and I are not TTC yet (we're planning to start in the spring), but I'm hoping you might have some input/advice.

I've been taken off BCP for other reasons earlier this year.  My first cycles off were 178 days and 70 days....I'm on day 27 of my current cycle (so not outside of normal fro this cycle yet) my PCP referred me to an RE just because I was originally put on BCPs for irregular periods and didn't have a work-up at that time and she knows H and I are looking to start TTC in the spring.

anyways, the RE did a bunch of blood work and said she'd like to do a progesterone withdrawal test...I haven't picked up the prescription yet. I'm headed out of town for the weekend for a bridal shower...and would rather not be dealing with hormone side-effects.  have any of you done a progesterone withdrawal test? did you experience any side-effects?

TIA!

Re: progesterone withdrawal test question

  • Is this where you take progesterone for 10 days and then wait for a bleed? I've had to do it a few times and I get my period within 7-10 days of taking the first pill. I was a hormonal hot mess (although there were other contributing factors) and the period I got was fairly normal for me.

Yes, this is where you take high dose progesterone for 10 days (provora) and wait to bleed when you withdraw the progesterone.

I'm considering waiting a few more weeks to see if this cycle decided to fall into the "normal" under 60 days range...

  • Honestly I would take the progesterone now after waiting so long to see if your body would cooperate.

Thanks ladies. My hormones are so whacked as my body tries to find normal (i had a total breakdown for no reason today), probably won't make much difference throwing something else into the mix. Now I just need it to stop snowing so I can get to the pharmacy to pick up the script.

    Edited because spelling is hard.

  • Hi again ladies,
Bumping this from a few weeks ago...I think I've basically failed the progesterone test. I finished the pills on 12/20 and I've had nothing more than spotting since then.
Do any of you know what this means? My doctor is on vacation and Dr. Google is unhelpful

  • One of my Provera bleeds was very light. It was just slightly more than spotting. I think I used one light tampon and that was it. I asked my obgyn's office and the nurse said that the Provera can sometimes thin the uterine lining, causing a very light bleed. I brought it up the next time I saw my obgyn and she wasn't concerned.

Obviously, I would still bring it up to your doctor when you can but that is my personal experience with it.

  • Thanks @OohSparkly

this has been daily spotting, but never heavy enough to require any sort of tampon or pad...just a precautionary panty liner. it's confusing me... and if this is considered an extremely light period I'm not sure what day to make as CD1.

I hate my body right now.

  • Whenever I took provera (mutiple times) I got a barely there period or spotting. As long as the spotting was red, my RE and OB said it counted.

I'm now curious...  I'm on day CD53 (no ovulation) but I did have a week of spotting I'm wondering if that might have been my period?  I only had one day (possibly two) where I had pink or red spotting, but it was very light.  I used a tampon once, but that was because I didn't want to ruin a pair of underwear.  lol
Red spotting/light period counts as your period if you took Provera normally. Not otherwise. If you hit CD 60, call your doctor.

I'm actually going to call today to set up an appointment for when we get back from vacation.  CD60 will hit next week while we are on our cruise.  And I will be super duper pissed off if I actually get my period on the cruise after almost 60 days.

Stupid body... (kinda sarcastic but not really)
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that CD60 doesn't bring any nasty surprises!

I actually "for-real" started my period on Saturday...no questions about that one...So now I'm going back in FF and marking all that spotting as such, no doubt that saturday was CD1.
