Electric Bills

This is a thing everywhere, right? Not just New England?  I got my first (partial) bill at the new higher rate and I want to puke.  J did the math and it's up 69%.  Of course I live where we have the most idiotic electric company (remember Unitil with the ice storm?) with some of the highest rates.  I'm shocked that more people I know aren't talking about this.

  • Eeek - we haven't gotten ours yet but ours last month was about the same.

  • Hmmm...I haven't gotten mine yet.  I'll have to look at it.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • Ours was actually lower and I am embarrassed to say that I'm pretty sure it's because I was gone the entire billing period. I like to be comfortable.

  • Our electric bill is insane.  As is our heating bill.

  • Our bill is crazy, but better in the winter than it is in the summer.  The summer with the AC and the dehumidifier in the basement, it's OBSCENE and I want to cry.

  • I'm thinking it must just be Massachusetts?  They're probably just pissed about the pipeline.

"Starting this month, electricity rates for National Grid customers will be 37 percent higher than last winter and nearly 50 percent higher than in October."

"The monthly electric bill for the average household in Boston and several nearby municipalities will rise from $95 to $123, while the bill for a typical Cambridge household will go from $92 to $120. The bills of customers formerly served by Commonwealth Electric, including Cape Cod and much of the South Shore, will go up by a similar amount, from $101 to $129."

  • We're on the level payment plan, so we pay monthly an average of our usage from last year. It helps keep the winter highs from being too painful. Although, we have gas heat, not electric.

  • The new EPA rules on coal emissions will hit AZ hard, but not until next year.  We also won't know how strict it will be until the EPA reviews the comments etc. DH works for our rural electric co-ops and has been trying to raise awareness about this for months, but no one seems to care until they actually get their damn electric bill.

Isn't that so interesting?  My ILs told me that their electric bill went from 50-60 to 200 this month.  I don't claim to know if they might have been using more electricity than normal, but this is crazy!  It's impressive to me that the electric companies have been giving us the numbers for months, but not even the news is really covering.  No one is talking about it around the water cooler.  Maybe it's the idea that if we can't change it, why talk about it?

We're in a co-op now and i'm not sure I like it. My bill was $30 higher than with the other company.

  • Mine isn't bad at all, but I'm in SC and it doesn't get cold enough here. I think today it stayed around 45*.

  • Our electric bill has been really low the last two months--less than $100 for a 2400 sf house.

Now, talk to me in the summer.  The bills look MUCH different.

I live in Texas for reference.

  • It's like that in CT too. Prices went up. Just got our new bill this month and it went up almost $100 :(. Sucks, we have electric heat too.

This is us, too. I like knowing that I won't get hit with a really high bill one month.
