Cars

DH and I are in the market for a used car.  We have a CRV already and love it.  Now we are in need of a second car and want something reliable and good on gas.  What do you and DH drive?  Is it good on gas?  Would you buy it again?

Re: Cars

  • Right now:

H has a 2012 Chevy Cruze.  He loves it, great on gas (30-35MPG).  There are a bunch of recalls he needs to get it fixed soon.

H also has a 1994 Jeep Cherokee.  It's his 4WD beater that he get ridiculous tires on and a flood light.  I don't ask, it was used from "his" money.

I have 2009 Jeep Compass.  It's gets ok gas, 20ish.  I LOVE IT!!!  I've had it for 6 years, and it's been great.  97k miles, and the only thing it's needed is a thermostat.

BUT I'm also in the market - Looking at a 2015 GMC Acadia.  We need something bigger for our trips to NC.  I'm kinda sad to get rid of it, but with those miles on it, I need to before it drops in trade in value.  I go tomorrow to see if this one Acadia is MINE!

  • I have a 2009 Kia Sportage. I like it. Its decent on gas mileage (around 20ish). Its a small SUV and its got lots of storage space. The only thing is that I didn't get the 4WD ( they offer it but I didn't think it mattered so I didn't go for it) and the first winter we had a terrible blizzard and I got stuck in the snow. If I ever got a new vehicle it would have 4WD since you never know when you will need it.
DH has a 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant. The gas mileage is good (25ish I think). He likes it but he's been looking at other vehicles since he eventually wants either a truck or SUV but he's not actively looking especially since we just paid off both cars.

  • I drive a 2010 Toyota Corolla. You want reliability, Toyotas are TANKS. They last forever. My sister's 2004 Corolla has survived 200k miles including two cross-country trips with no major issues. And they get good mileage. Toyota is my religion, man. I will pimp those cars to anyone who will listen.

H drives a Mazda CX-5. It's a larger vehicle with 4-wheel drive, which is a plus when you're up to your ass in snow like we so often are. Plowed into his parking spot? No problem, he just backs right over the snow without issue. It's pretty comfortable to drive and gets great mileage for an SUV.

  • @mana8503 I am a fan of the Acadia.  I've never been in one, but they look really nice.  My next car will be a Chevy or GMC.

I drive a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee.  I hate it.  This is my second one, first was a 2007.  The 07 was fabulous in every way.  It was my favorite car I've ever had.  It was totaled and I only had some scratches, my passengers were just bruised.  The 2010 has had so many little problems.  It is definitely not the same quality as Jeep used to be.  As soon as we have enough money, I am getting rid of it, although H says he'll take it.

H drives a 2007 Mercury Milan.  He loves it, I don't.  I don't find the seats to be very comfortable, especially when we drive to visit his family (about 45 minutes away)  It gets decent gas mileage, but I'm a fan of 4WD or AWD and that has neither.  He is also getting a new car when we can afford it, he just doesn't know/realize it yet.
  • I drive a 2014 Mazda CX-5. I love everything about it and would absolutely buy it again. It gets great gas mileage for a little SUV. I drive mostly back roads, not much highway, and I average 27.2 MPG. If I'm on the interstate, I average low 30's. It is super comfy and H loves driving it, which says something. He's a car snob and says it's fun to drive.

H drives a 2010 VW GTI. It gets similar gas mileage to mine. I strongly dislike it. He likes it okay, but he rarely drives it since he has a work truck he takes to and from work.

  • We sold our car after selling our house last year to lower our monthly expenses and "bought" my parents BMW (it's still in their name, we just pay for it and will officially purchase it after we close on the house). It's a 2010 5 series and it gets pretty good mileage, around 30 I think. It's expensive to maintain though and not very roomy inside.

We're going to keep it as a second vehicle, but it's definitely not big enough for a family of 5. We'll be getting an SUV after we close on the house and we've been looking at Tahoes and Explorers since they have 3rd row options with captain seats in the second row. The Explorer has better gas mileage of the two and it's less expensive so we're leaning towards that.

  • I drive a 2007 Prius. Great gas mileage, I think I average around 45 mpg. But, it is small.

H drives a 2010 Ford Edge. It is a gas hog though, only gets between 15-20 mpg. But, we both love it. If I worked closer, we would trade out.

  • I drive a 2011 Chevy Cruze and adore it. Very comfortable, stylish look to the interior, and a great turbo engine. :) Really has some get-up-and-go for not being a sports car. Gas mileage is also pretty good. I drive almost exclusively within the city and get about 27-29mpg, but before this position, it was mostly highway and I was getting low-30s. Like mana said, there have been some recalls, but always taken care of at the dealer. Highly recommend checking it out. I bought mine and a month later, my dad bought one because it liked it so much, as well as another friend.

H drives a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Very impractical, poor gas mileage (~17-19mpg), but he loves it. It was his dream to own a Jeep and drive it into the ground (he's a country boy), so that's his plan. It has needed a lot of work (brakes, oil issues, general squeaks and scratches), the soft top is mostly destroyed due to salty NY winters, but he could care less. He loves that thing! I think he'd love to get another Jeep when this one kicks the bucket, but does realize how impractical it is.
  • We have an 08 pontiac vibe and a 98 ford escort. We use the vibe more since it's in better condition.

My complaint is the fact that it handles crappy in snow and occasionally decides that I need to slam on the gas to go uphill.

  • H drives a Honda CRV. We love it too!

I drive a Honda Civic. You can't beat the gas milage (35mpg).

    We're big Honda fans : )
