  • -6 this morning, feels like -17.   I didn't wear a coat in, just a sweatshirt.  I feel like it doesn't feel different between 20 and -6.  It's just COLD.

My SIL emailed me for makeup advice this morning and I'm overly smug about it.  She's the "perfect" person, or she strives to be, so it must have been very hard for her to ask.

Now I feel a little less smug.  Harumph.

  • I really want to try CrossFit, but am totally intimidated by it, which pisses me off. I think I would love it once I got started, but my introverted self has a mini panic attack at the thought of being the out of shape, slightly older newb. Any of you into CrossFit? Tell me I am being a p*ssy and to just do it already! lol

My SIL and BIL do it.  They said that they modify the workouts based on your level at the time.  They are in their late 30's / early 40's.  She said its a mix of age and fitness levels.

I did this the other day. I rationalized by blaming it on pain meds at the time. The one nice thing was that, because they were inside out, the seams weren't bugging me like they typically do. I considered wearing all of mine inside out, then felt like a weirdo and decided against it.

It's 18 degrees outside (that's cold in the South!) and I really don't want to leave my house but I promised I'd meet a friend for lunch. I'm considering flaking because I'm so cozy with my kitties and coffee and netflix.

Hahaha also all the schools around here had a 2-3 hour delay because it was only 10* this morning. ETA: I know it's because of the bus stop thing, but businesses and churches were closed this morning too.

  • We bought our house in 2002. We have never ever ever not even one time turned on a heater. And we don't have air conditioning. It only ever gets down to maybe 32 degrees and maybe as hot as 100 around here. And those are two extremes.

This works for me because I am a snow wimp, and I melt easily in heat.

I do this probably once a week, when I notice, I think I just need to fold my underwear better instead of just shoving it in the drawer.

@MrsJenE If it keeps happening, you may want to  have your vitamin D levels checked.  This was happening to me last year BAD and my vitamin D levels ended up being ridiculously low and I had prescription vitamin D.  All better now.  :)

Oh, I have lots of thoughts about CF.

I did it for about a year and a half and quit back in Oct. I was NOT an athlete at all, ever, and I was pretty intimidated to start...but they REALLY do scale/modify workouts for you depending on your skill/ability level. That said, I would really feel most comfortable walking in with a certain amount of athleticism/endurance. I read about some people coming in over 100lbs overweight who can't even run 200m who do it and, honestly, I can't imagine that, even with scaling/modifications. I mean, I was really one of the lowest at my gym when it came to ability/endurance, but I could still do the basics.

The KEY to having a good CF experience is the gym you go to. It's sort of trendy to open CF gyms right now, and you really need only the basic certification to be a CF coach/instructor. The first gym I went to was pretty terrible, but I didn't know better. They didn't do a lot of warm ups, they didn't explain things well, they made you feel stupid if you needed modifications, and I didn't always get the sense they really knew what they were doing. I saw several people get injured while I was there, and, honestly, I'm surprised there weren't more.

After that I tried a different gym and the difference was startling. This gym cared so much about our health, our technique, if we were doing things correctly. They wanted to challenge us, but not at the expense of our health. Preventing injury was always super important, and they were ridiculously helpful with scaling and modifications. I always felt welcome there, regardless of my ability or skill level, and they always always always had a modification for me if there was something I couldn't do. It was a good balance of cardio and weights, and it was a very chill environment. They weren't big on the CF "scene" - never used the dumb (IMO) CF buzzwords (box, WOD, etc) and just focused on us and our goals. I LOVED the vibe at that gym.

So if you do start CF, REALLY look for a good gym. Look up reviews on yelp. Talk to people you know who do it. Try the free classes (most offer a free day or week) and see the vibe. Talk to the people there. See what their gym philosophy is. If they are super into competitions, it might not be the gym for you. If they are more into lifting and you want a more well-rounded workout, it might not be the gym for you. CF is EXPENSIVE AS HELL, so you really want to make sure you're getting the most out of it and STAYING SAFE and working out with PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

In the end, I quite CF for a few reasons. I really enjoyed it, and I miss it a lot, but I just don't think it was the right workout for me. After doing it for a year and a half, I never lost a single pound. I gained a lot of muscle/strength/endurance/skills, but my body looked pretty much the same and I was the same on the scale. My goal was to lose weight, and this obviously wasn't working for me. Also, I had been trying for over a year to get pg and it just wasn't happening. I had a feeling CF might just be too hard on my body (I had a mc at one point), especially because I didn't have any sort of athletic background. And, you know what? I got pg the next cycle after I quit.

Anyway, if you have any specific questions, let me know. I'm by no means an expert, but I do have experience with it, a good gym and a bad one, and I really liked it but ultimately quit, so I have lots of opinions. Heh. I totally recommend giving it a try, though. It's a blast once you get the hang of it.

  • Thanks Y_L!  That was really great info. I had also been debating trying CF, but was unsure about so much. Your info reinforced some of the reasons why I thought maybe CF wasn't for me.

  • Thanks so much, Y_L!  This is exactly what I was wanting to know. There is a CF gym close to my house that I want to check out once I build up some endurance. They do offer a free class. Right now, I plan on doing some work out DVDs that I have had for ages (yoga, 30 Day Shred mostly) and hitting up the elliptical/coat hanger. I want to start C25K once it warms up some, maybe in March. I love running but have just been a lazy schlub about exercise in general for an embarrassingly long time. I told myself that I just want to do SOMETHING active and sweat-producing at least 3 times a week and go from there.
