Nursing Bras

I noticed that most nursing bras come in S, M, L, XL. For those of you who have purchased them before how did you pick your size? Pre-pregnancy I was a 34DD I am now far beyond DD and probably in the F range but I haven't bothered to purchase a bra because they are so expensive.
Technically the bra size guides say I would be an XL but if I am a 34 how would XL hold me up?

What brands did you like and what sizes did you go for?

Re: Nursing Bras

  • I was a 36D pre-pregnancy and ended up wearing a L in some, XL in others. I loved these nursing tanks and these sleep bras (was a L in both). I got a couple of these bras and was an XL, they say sleep bra, but I used it as my every day bra.

So far I've only bought a set of the sleep nursing bras, because I can no longer get away with not wearing a bra to bed.
I'm a 36/38 DD/DDD and bought a large.  It is not big enough in the bust area, but the band around my chest is too big.  I'm just going to make it work though.

    They're these

    ETA: Before pregnancy I was a 34B.

  • I was a 34C pre-pregnancy (with Adalyn) and a 36DD towards the end. I bought the nursing tanks and bras from Target, and I found that the L fit me pretty well, I probably would've gotten an XL in sleep bras instead of a L, because they were a little snug around my chest, but the L in nursing tanks were perfect. They aren't true bras, so they won't give you support like a structured nursing bra will (and I wouldn't buy those until at least 3 weeks pp because before then you will likely have porn star boobs), but they are nice for around the house and for sleeping in. They also help keep the nursing pads in place. So do camis with build in shelves, I would suggest those over nursing tanks. Way cheaper and they work just as well.

  • I was the same size prepregnacy and am currently a 36G I believe. I am planning on getting fitted for a proper sized bra in a few weeks. I have 2xl nursing tanks from target and explode put of them, I feel like I have very little support. I got them more to sleep in when we have company and they are passable for that but not for every day wear.

  • Well I went to Target and even the XL's are too small... :-( @aggiebug I am the same size now too. I need either a 2X or larger.

  • I would probably wait a little longer and go to Motherhood to get 1 that fits well but still has a little room to grow.  Then wait until 2-3 weeks PP to buy more, in case your size changes.

  • Boo it totally sucks @Sewilson33‌ . I agree with @brij2006‌ to wait a while and then get fitted with a proper bra but don't bother with motherhood maternity they don't carry our size.

I was suggested to go to Nordstroms or a local lingerie shop to get properly fitted. I did for this last bra change about a month and a half ago and then I will go and get fitted about 3wks from my due date (unless a Dr appt indicates that could be pushing it) and get 1 nursing bra. I will eventually get more but they can change a lot postpartum too and I don't want to get stuck with multiple expensive bras that don't fit.

  • If you plan to get fitted, I definitely would wait until a few weeks after your milk comes in. Like @sgautschi said, you will more than likely have huge porn star boobs for awhile, but that won't last long.

  • Since we are talking about boobs and bra's on this thread... Did anyone not change sizes in the first trimester? All I hear on my bmb and from mom's is how much their boobs grew during first tri. I'm still the same size. Not complaining, as I'm already a 36DDD, but just curious if this is normal as well.

  • @mseale - A friend of mine barely grew a half of a cup size from start of pregnancy to postpartum. I think there are all sorts of 'normal' when it comes to pregnancy boobs.
  • @mseale - I barely grew the 1st trimester even though DH says I did. I think my boobs just looked different to him. But I was already a DD and by 2nd trimester my boobs went crazy and changed sizes 3 times.

  • @mseale Everyone is different.  I grew almost a cup size before even taking a pregnancy test.  H said he knew I was pregnant before testing because my boobs were the same as last time I was pregnant.  My BFF grew 1 cup size when her milk came in, and never through pregnancy.

  • @mseale my boobs were super tender and sensitive, but didn't get bigger until the end of my pregnancy.

  • @mseale I only grew a cup size during pregnancy, which already wasn't much since I was a A/B cup. Now that I'm nursing, I can grow up to a B/C when I'm full, back to an A after her feeding.

  • Thanks for the info ladies. Seems all I hear about is that people grew during 1st tri, but seems like the rest just don't normally say anything. :)
