The Golem and Jinni: SPOILERS

I neglected all kinds of work today and finished this book. Oh, it was great! To be honest, it was a little slow for me in the beginning. Beautifully-written, but a little slow. As the story progressed though, I was thankful for it. I couldn't believe Ice Cream Saleh died to help them. I wonder about Sophia though. I know she got to travel, but did her symptoms go away? I really wanted the Jinni to be freed and come back for Chava anyhow. Bleh, my thoughts about this book are all over the place right now!

Re: The Golem and Jinni: SPOILERS

  • Where did the story pick up for you?  I'm curious because I never had that moment where I felt like things picked up. The entire book felt so slow and drawn out to me.

I didn't love it or really even like it that much.  I really thought I would have liked it more, especially with all of the glowing reviews on NBC, but I just couldn't get into it.

  • I think it was once the Golem attacked Irving that it picked up for me. I put it down a couple of times up to that point.

  • I feel like Ice Cream Saleh was a bit of a contrived plot device but it didn't much mar my love for the book as a whole. The Golem and the Jinni were such rich characters.

  • I didn't ever really feel like it was an action-packed or fast-moving book.  I loved it, but it was definitely more about the characters and the writing for me than it was about the story itself.

    Same here.

  • I agree that it definitely wasn't action-packed, I was just curious because she said it was slow in the beginning for her and it felt slow the entire book for me. I was wondering if maybe there was a turning point where the slow beginning might have shifted some and the story started to progress more?

With any book that's more about the characters/writing than the plot itself, I think it just naturally takes awhile to fall in love with the characters.  I'm not always "in to" lots of books right away, because I just don't really KNOW the characters yet.  For me, the pace of this story didn't really change, but the more I found out about the characters the more obsessed I became.
This makes a lot of sense as to why I never really got into the book.  I know that you learn more about the characters as you get further along, I just didn't fall in love with any of them at any point and that is part of what was missing for me especially with such a slow building plot.  If there would have been another element that drew me in, I might have felt differently.

  • I read this over the weekend and really enjoyed it! There were several passages where I caught myself skimming and thought it could have benefited from a trim, but overall the plot kept me engaged. (It was the lengthy back-stories involving secondary characters that lost my attention. That and some of the jinni's desert stories that didn't involve the girl whose dreams he invaded.) But hey, I finished it in 2 days, which is saying a lot.

Anyhoo, I liked the ending. It was hopeful without being too perfect, because there's only so much of a happy ending these characters could realistically have.

Thanks for the rec, guys! This was a nice change of pace. :)
