Primrose oil

Have any of you heard of taking primrose oil before labor? My boss mentioned this to me today and how it helps with labor and delivery but she is about 30 years older than me. Anyway, have any of you mommies taking it before birth or plan to?

Re: Primrose oil

  • I started taking it at about 36 weeks pregnant! I'd take 2 orally in the morning and 2 vaginally before bed. It's supposed to help soften your cervix. It did that for me!

I had a doula that suggested it to me. And Brij's midwife was just talking to her about starting it too
  • I started taking it orally around 37 or 38 weeks, I think?  I was not up for taking it vaginally.  I went into labor at 39 weeks on the dot.  I have no idea if it helped or not, but I figured it couldn't hurt, right?

  • This might be a ridiculous question but, how do you take them vaginally? Just slip 2 pills up there? I feel like they would fall out when I wake up to pee.

    Also, any brand recommendations?

  • I only took it vaginally for about a week, before I switched to orally. I would cut the pill open and then rub the oil all up in there....sorry TMI!
Thanks!!! I was so confused on what shoving a pill up there would do!

  • Oh yeah I just shoved them as far up there as I could
  • The doula recommends starting 500mg twice/day starting at 36 weeks, then add 1,000mg vaginally at 38 weeks.  She recommended to insert them at night before bed, so they're dissolved before you wake up for the day.

  • I took 2 a day starting at 37 weeks, and it did nothing for me, I ended up having a c-section because my cervix never thinned out.
