Whats the best age to have a baby?

I would like to reach out and ask all the community members, what your personal views are on the best age to have a baby?

When did you have your first child?

What were the positivess/negatives to this age?

If you haven't had a child yet, when are you planning  on having one? Why?

My husband and I are thinking we want to have our first child at around 25. Would  you think this is a good age?

Re: Whats the best age to have a baby?

  • The answer to this is really different for everyone. It depends, at least, on your place in life, financial situation, and whether you suspect/worry you'll have any trouble conceiving.

For me, my husband and I decided we were ready to try when he was 27 and I was a couple months away from 27. We were about a year away from finishing grad school and had met the savings goals we had set for having a baby.

  • An arbitrary Age is far less important to me than where your life is. For me, I wouldn't have been "ready" for a baby any before 30. I know 25 year olds that have babies and it was a good thing and I know 25 year olds that should have never pro created. Only you and your DH ccan know if it's the "best" time. For us, the best time was when we were not living paycheck to paycheck. We are not loaded and there is never the right amount to have a baby, but I'm not stressing at months end on how I'm going to buy food/necessities for our family.

PR/BR: I will have our first child at 34. Seemed ancient age when I was 25...but I don't quite need a walker yet.

We are planning on TTC starting in May. I'll be 33 and H, 32.

At this age, we'll have had the opportunity to travel, become successful in our careers, buy a home and gain financial stability (which means I have the luxury of choice between staying home or going back to work when the time comes, which is important to me).

We know this age may mean difficulty getting pregnant and have discussed the lengths we would be willing to go in order to conceive, and at which point we would stop and pursue another route.

I absolutely think there are advatages and disadvantages to starting a family at any age, I just knew it was best for me to first pour my heart, energy and money into living my own live and fulfilling my dreams, before I could put my full attention on the lives and dreams of my children.

  • There is no answer to when the right age to have a kid is. It is going to be different for everyone. Some people will be financially and emotionally ready at 22. Some, 42. It isn't something anyone here can answer for you. If when you turn 25 you feel you're ready, start trying.

I was with my husband when I was 25, but we weren't even engaged. We were no where near ready at that point. But some people may be. We got married when I was 28 and DH was 27. A month or so later we decided we wanted to start trying for a baby. We had our house, stable jobs, and like @aimothy, we didn't have lots of money but weren't living month to month so we felt it was time. We were also together 8 years at this point. We knew, other than being married, we are both in this forever. So yea, we started trying at 28ish. It was right for us. But we have plenty of friends our age who aren't anywhere near wanting kids yet. And that's fine.

Basically, wait until you're ready. Don't put a number on it. For us, we just knew we were ready to try.

  • I'm 30, pregnant with my first. There is a small part of me that wishes we had waiting longer. I'm finished with my graduate degree, but my husband isn't, so it's going to be hard to make some things work. Personally, I couldn't imagine having a child at 25. My career was not well established, my husband had not even started graduate school, and I had never even travelled out of the country.

  • I agree with what everyone said! I've had many friends who had babies at 25, but I wasn't even married yet. I wanted to be settled with good jobs that would support us financially and emotionally to have children. I want to be able to provide for my child without feelings completely overwhelmed and stressing. I will have our first child at age 31. Don't worry about a number, make sure you have accomplished what you would like to accomplish before kids.

  • The older I get, the more grateful I am that we didn't have kids young.  I'm in my early 30's.

  • I agree with Aimothy. I don't think age matters so much. I think it's more where you're at in life.
