Stinky CW...literally.

I'm going to preface this by saying I have an exceptional sense of smell.  We're talking borderline bloodhound.  And I came from a job where it was kind of important to notice odd smells coming from those around me.  You know, in case someone had an accident and needed to be sent to the nurse but might be embarrassed to say something.  So perhaps other people in my office aren't as bothered by this as I am...

One of my CWs started wearing the most (IMO) offensive perfume.  It's SO strong and (again, IMO) very masculine.  And I think she bathes in it.  She sits at the opposite end of the hallway from me and I can smell her as soon as she comes in.  When she's next to me, I get a headache.  My eyes actually started to water today during a meeting.

So...is there anything I can do about this?  Or do I just suffer?  What's the etiquette here?

  • I think unless you're BFF with her, you just suck it up and hope the bottle runs out soon.

  • There was a lady I worked with at the bank like this. You could could tell if she had been in the hallway 10 minutes after she was there. I think eventually enough people from all different teams complained and her manager did say something to her, but she still kept doing it.

Maybe tell your manager, and they can handle it. Id blame it on your sinuses and say that you have a major headache because of it everyday. You can't be the only one to notice if it's that bad.

  • I actually think this is an HR issue. You could bring it up to them and have them ask her to wear less.
  • Haha, what a range of responses!  Thanks for the input, ladies.

Side note - Whenever I find someone else's aroma offensive, I immediately become paranoid about my own.  What if someone else in the office can't stand the way I smell?!?!

  • I had a co-worker like this years ago. You always knew where he was in the building. After hanging out with him for a few years, I began to think he wore so much cologne to cover up the booze smell from the night before. You know coming out of his pores?
