MFA or Babies?

Anyone else in the same boat? My husband and I are both 30 and he's just becoming established in a new career. I am established in mine, but we are planning a cross-country move later this year for his job. I have a good chance of being able to transfer to my company's location out there, but it's not 100%. I know that getting an MFA will lead me to a better salary and better benefits to support a family down the road, but knowing I'll be 33 when I finish grad school is a bit daunting. I also realize that getting the degree doesn't guarantee a job right away. 33 is a little older than I wanted to be when we start trying, but I can't imagine doing grad school while pregnant. I definitely will get the MFA at some point, but it's whether to do it before or after babies. Anyone been through this? I'm curious to hear insight from others!

Re: MFA or Babies?

  • 34 is older than I wanted to be having a baby too, but it still works at 33. Do not have a baby before you are ready. It sounds like careers are important to you to get in a better place financially.

  • Did you have fears about trouble conceiving? Congrats, by the way! :-) We are actually pretty good financially and will be moving to a much cheaper area than we live in now. I guess I'm just thinking about wanting group health insurance as opposed to the Marketplace insurance we have now.
  • I finished grad school May 14, and DH and I are waiting until I have been at my new job for 6 months before starting TTC (we should start Aug/Sept 15). I wanted to wait until I was done with school and settled into my new job before trying to get pregnant.

I'm currently 27, and I will have just turned 28 when we start trying. I have PCOS and DH has a varicocele. It may not cause fertility issues for us, but we are well aware that it might. I wanted to wait until I had been established in a job before we start TTC. Ultimately, only you and your DH can decide when the time is right for y'all!

  • I can't add much other than what the previous posters have said. It does sound like you want to be established in your career, I would probably do the MFA first. You never know if having a baby will put off you getting it later.

  • Did you have fears about trouble conceiving?
I knew at age 25 that I would probably have trouble conceiving (i never had regular periods), so for me, that thought was there no matter what age I was.

  • I'm finishing up grad school in May.  I'll be 34 when I graduate.  I told my husband I wasn't waiting to have a baby until I was 34.  So I work full time and go to school part time and we had a baby.  It was something that I wasn't willing to wait for.  I was 32 when he was born, and while grad school has been tough with a baby, I don't regret it.  I didn't want to put off having a baby for school.

  • I'm probably not much help, but... If I were in your shoes, I would say school/career first and baby later. However, if I knew what I know now about my IF issues, school may have waited for me. I graduated grad school in 2009 but wasn't ready to TTC until 2012 (at 32, which is by no means too old to start trying!). That all being said, we wouldn't have been able to afford IF treatment without where I am now in my career, so somewhat of a catch 22. Either way, best of luck with whatever path you and YH decide to take!

  • I think it depends on if you want multiple kids.

One kid at 33/34 is fine/doable.

But now you add in wanting a second, a couple years in between and maybe 6 months - 1 year TTC, well now you're 37/38 for the second, which isn't unheard of, but is toward the end of your fertility and higher risk for some issues (both pg issues and issues with the kiddo).

And no real time for a third kid (if that was something you wanted).

I know that of which I speak. I am turning 34 this year and I have a 17 month old.

If we want to have a second, we have to figure it out in the next couple years.

Base on what I think we can handle (money and time wise) I might be 36/37 if/when we have a second (if we are even successful), which honestly is older than I would prefer to be. I would prefer to be under 35, but that's just me.

The other question I had was in regard to the MFA. I don't know what you do or what you want to do once you have the MFA, but not all masters degrees actually mean you will have more job opportunities and/or make more money. Sometimes (especially if you are doing student loans and/or attending an expensive school) it doesn't pay off (financially). So I would weigh the risks heavily.

I would definitely wait until you have moved and settled down before TTC. I would not want to try to move while pg (for a variety of reasons).

Thank you so much for your responses, ladies!

Here are my reasons for wanting to possibly put off the MFA. I'm currently a dance teacher at a private college that has a campus in LA, which is where we'll be moving. This is a great job with benefits that doesn't require me to have a degree, but as I mentioned in my first post, although it's likely I can transfer it's not 100%.

Our plan has always been to move back to our hometown in Northern California to settle down, but for now my husband's job is in LA. I would still like to move to Northern California eventually because that's where our families are, but that wouldn't be for several years. If/when we do move back to our hometown, I have a standing job offer at a community college, but that is contingent on me getting my MFA.

So my dilemma is, do I swallow the student loans and just get the MFA in case we get to move home? Or do I cross that bridge when we come to it, knowing we might not actually come to it? As you said, the MFA doesn't necessarily mean a job. My current employer won't pay me any more if I have it. Because I have no contacts in the LA colleges, I don't think it would be easy for me to get a job at one, which means that if we stay in LA permanently I don't really need the MFA.

I do also want at least two children, so that is also weighing in on this.

Thank you for your input! It's comforting to hear that although it's not ideal, it is possible to do simultaneously.

Thanks again for all the answers and advice everyone. It's very much appreciated!
