Neighborhood Meanie or Validly Concerned Citizen - Discuss!

There's a drainage pond at the front of our neighborhood.  When it freezes over, people come to play hockey.  I've always found it incredibly adorable.  Very "small town USA"-ish.  Well, I got an email today from one of our neighbors.  He sent it to the whole neighborhood.  In it, he goes on and on about how terrible it is that people do this and how he "hopes we all agree."  He gave us a phone number to call to report anyone improperly using the pond.

This is not the first winter that this has happened and it's not like the Broad Street Bullies are invading our neighborhood; it's families!  The neighborhood doesn't even own the pond and we wouldn't be liable if someone got hurt, so I'm not sure what his beef is.  But...perhaps I am being too blasé about this.  Do you think it's an issue?

  • Who really cares?

Also my first thought was, does it really get solid enough to skate? Is that safe? But maybe it does since the water probably isn't that deep?
  • Seriously, why does this guy even care? He sounds like a douche nugget.

  • Neighbor needs to mind his own business. I can't see how it would bother him. Although, I'd be nervous if my own child was out there. Like how do they check to make sure its safe?

  • Yeah he just seems like a party pooper. I totally understand the anxiety from someone that may have had a bad experience with something going wrong before, but its not his job to police the pond that isnt even on his/the neighborhoods property.
  • He definitely sounds like a douche nugget.

Yeah, it fills up quickly when we get a lot of rain, but I'd be surprised if there was more than a foot of water in there normally.

I'm glad you ladies feel the same way I do!

One of his arguments against this was that cars are parked near the entrance of the neighborhood and that makes leaving and entering the community inconvenient and unsafe.  That's just ridiculous!  They don't park by the entrance, first of all.  Second, EVERY MORNING I have to drive through a gauntlet of mini vans to leave the neighborhood.  And it's comprised of people who live here.  They park on both sides of the street, making it only wide enough for one car to go through.  And kids will dart out without paying attention to the moving vehicles around them.  And then the parents will pull out and turn around (also without paying attention) to go back to their houses once the kids get on the bus.  THAT is inconvenient and unsafe, my friend.  Maybe we need to report that instead!
