QOTD 1/21

On the news this morning, there was a report about it being illegal in some states to take your kids out of school to go on a family vacation.  They didn't list the states.  How do you feel about this?

  • Illegal? That's a bit much. I think some states need to step back and get their priorities straight.

  • It's total bs. Missing a week of school isn't going to make or break a kid's education. Also it's messed up to dictate when parents can or can't spend time with their children.

Yea I call BS.  I always got out the week of Thanksgiving to go to NC to see family.  I got my homework turned in, and any new assignments before I left.  Maybe if parents stepped up the state wouldn't have to.  Maybe there should be a max days missed?

ETA - by parents stepping up, I mean making sure the kid doesn't get behind because of the days missed... getting assignments etc.

  • It's BS. As long as they're not missing so much as to be truant, I don't see how it's anyone else's business when parents take their kids on vacation.

  • That's total BS.  Our state does have regulations about how much school is missed and if the child goes over the allowed amount, authorities are involved, but it has to be pretty bad to get to that level.  I remember when I was in HS, I missed too much school and I had to sit and make up the time in the office on the weekends or after school hours.

  • I don't think they should make it illegal. As a teacher, it can be frustrating when they miss a lot due to vacations and such. But it happens and it doesn't usually end up impacting them that much. That's stupid.

  • I think public schools have no right to tell parents what they can and can't do with their kids.

  • I think illegal is a bit much. I dont think that schools should dictate what parents can and cant do with their kids as far as vacation but I will say working in a school if you are going to take your kid on vacation then be responsible enough to call, let us know, request work and dont let your kid fall behind

  • It is much to make it illegal, but I do not agree with taking kids out of school to go on vacation.  Most of my teaching is teaching, learning from me and the other students.  It's not pen and paper work and it can't be made up.  There is actual work that I give, but it's not what I do most of the day.  When kids aren't in school, they are missing important information.  In my school district, if you miss 10 consecutive days without letting the school know, you can be dropped and have to re-register with the district and risk losing your spot in the school you attend.

Last year, I had to kid go out of the country for a month for a family emergency.  I called to let the mother know he had work coming with him.  He did not bring the work with him because he "forgot."  It is quite frustrating as a teacher.  Thinking about last year, I also had a girl go on a 10 day cruise prior to a vacation.  She didn't come to school for the few days before the cruise.  Including the vacation, she missed 3 weeks of school and also didn't bring any work with her.  She did have a nice tan though!
  • Illegal seems like a bit of a stretch. But, I could see why they'd strongly encourage it.

I'm happy to say I've experienced both sides of this argument. When I was in first grade, my mom took me out of classes early and took me with her to Virginia to visit my aunt and uncle. I worked on homework in the car and never heard anything otherwise from my teacher for missing anything.

When I was in high school, I was a participant in a dance team. We had a competition out of state that would require us to be off school for at most two days. (It fell towards the end of the week, so we'd be back in first thing Monday morning) It was basically a glorified vacation since our parents were in attendance and it was out of state. There were five or six of us that were in the same school on this team. Our respective parents turned in necessary paperwork and we requested all of our assignments so that we may keep up with all the work. One girl was basically told by the principal that she had to get her grades up in order to be allowed to go. Otherwise, she was not permitted to take the extra time off.
