First Trip to L&D

Well little man scared me enough to make a trip to L&D tonight. He decided to not move between lunch at noon and 7pm, regardless of position, food and drink, and me poking and prodding him. My FTM panic set in and we decided to make a trip for my sanity. He looked good on the monitor and after laying flat on my back for 20 minutes and drinking some apple juice, he started playing a game of soccer with my bladder. I've never been so happy to hear his heartbeat before. I cried like a baby. DH cried too. I'm in no way happy that we had to do that, but I am so relieved that he's ok.

LO - you need to keep moving for the next 9 weeks please. My nerves and heart can't take this stress.

  • I've learned that it's always worth a call to the dr and a trip in, especially after #2. I had a scare at 27w with DS1. But with DS2 I called the dr at 36w after drinking coke and getting no reaction. Two hours later I got the faintest movement and it was 12:30am so I went to sleep (the dr said it was my call to stay or go in). The following night I got sick and threw up. After all of that I expected that to have shaken the baby up, but it hadn't. No movement so I called again. He was moving by the time the dr called but she wanted me to come in anyways. All was good on the monitors and she sent me home. I had on/off nauseau. A week later I had my 37w appt and bc I had high BP and complaints of decreased movement she sent me for monitoring. They ended up sending me home with a plan to do a 12 hour urine catch and return in the morning to have the results run and to be monitored. I was told to arrive prepared to stay, and that's exactly what happened. Fast forward 8 hours later when they come to break my water after the induction started hours prior. My waters came out green, which meant he had had a BM in utero. That happens, but not until much later and closer to delivery. Nicu had to be present at birth to get the fluid out of his lungs. My OB said she was glad everything had happened as it did because it was very likely that the in utero BM was causing him some distress and it's something that the monitors and u/s wouldn't have detected. I'm so glad I called to mention decreased movement so that it was on record. I knew it didn't seem right, but I was trying not to be paranoid.

    Glad everything is ok!

  • Thanks, ladies! I totally skipped the calling the dr step because pgal brain set in and I was crying too much to call. I've put the number in DHs phone now so he can call if necessary (hopefully there's not a next time until March and I'll be in labor).

It just was very odd for little man to be so quiet. Especially with me poking and prodding him. It normally only takes a couple minutes and then I get whole body movements that seem like 'mom, I'm fine, leave me be' but not tonight. DH and I have each had talks with LO that he can't scare us like that again and that the more he practices his wiggling in there, the stronger he'll be when he comes out. Practice makes perfect, DH told him. :)
  • Glad to hear everything is ok!

  • So glad to hear that everything was okay.

We had a scare around 28 weeks, because baby was very quiet for a couple of days straight.  I honestly regret not calling in/ going in sooner.  Everything was fine, but I was told that if things hadn't been, I had probably waited too long.
So do not hesitate if you feel that something isn't right.

  • you did the right thing, and i'm so glad everything is okay!

lack of movement can be a really bad sign. a trip to the dr or ER is always a good idea in that case.

  • Glad everything is okay, and hopefully your little man will continue to do backflips for the next 9 weeks!

  • Thanks to all of you new responders too! Little man must know that he put me through the wringer yesterday because he's been pretty active all day. I've told him that if he wants to just kick and move 24 hours a day for the rest of our time, I'm totally for it! However I'm feeling quite a bit exhausted today from all of the emotional baggage that I felt yesterday. Hoping for early bed and some true rest tonight. PgAL brain is evil - just FYI :-/
  • I'm glad everything is ok!  I would have done the same thing and I get very anxious when I don't feel the little one moving around for a few hours.

  • So glad everything is okay, and he is being more active today! I went to the hospital at 7 weeks for an issue that I had and looking back, I would have done the exact same thing. Our minds can go all over the place and sometimes we just need to be reassured by that trip! Hope he cooperates for the rest of the pregnancy!
