WBC NYT Notable book "We Were Liars"

I had been hearing a lot about this book on here and seeing many read it on Goodreads, so when I saw it listed for this category I decided to pick it up.  It took me today to start and finish the book.  I was a little lost at the beginning but soon got into the book and then couldn't stop reading it.  The trials that the family went through made me think of my own family and some of the situations that we have gone through in our own time.  It has made me want to reach out to those I am not as close to anymore, more than just on Facebook.  I am glad I read this book and gave it four stars on Goodreads.

Re: WBC NYT Notable book "We Were Liars"

  • SPOILER:

I read this without reading much about it ahead of time so I think I enjoyed it more than other people who were expecting some big twist.
    Can I marry them all?

  • I didn't know about that part. I agree with you about that.

  • Yeah, I think Kpow is right. I read it knowing to expect a twist and didn't enjoy it as much as I might have otherwise.

Agreed.  I liked it overall, quite a bit.  I did roll my eyes a bit when it all came around.

  • I went into it knowing there was a twist as well, which I hate because I spend the whole time trying to figure out the twist. I figured out the "what" pretty early on but not the "how" until much closer to the end. I still really enjoyed the book though!

  • I did not know much about this book and I loved it.  I just knew it was supposed to be a great book so I started reading.  After reading, I realized how not knowing much about it probably made me enjoy it more.

  • I think even advertising that a book has a big twist is a spoiler. It really takes away from a reading experience when you are constantly wondering what the twist is going to be/trying to figure it all out.

  • I was actually just coming here to post my own review bc I read this book for the same category for WBC. I didn't know much about this book but I actually had a hard time relating to some of the characters. I just felt there was a lot of whining and what not going on. Once the big twist was revealed I then found it much easier and I actually think I might like the book better the second time around.

I do have to say though that the audio version was fabulous. The girl who read it really got into it. I would give her 5 stars but I ended up giving the book 3.5 on goodreads.
  • I've somehow been able to avoid most spoilers and fast forwarded to the end of this post. I've got it checked out from the library right now but haven't started yet. Interested in checking it out, since there's a mixed reaction.
  • I still need to read this one. It's been on my short list for ages.

  • Okay I skipped to the bottom because I'm afraid of spoilers. But I'm glad you liked it! It's on my TBR list.
