Anyone been to St. Lucia?

I just realized our trip is only 3 months away.  I've never traveled internationally either.  Is this one of those places that you can only drink bottled water at?

We are staying at a resort so all meals are included.  I'm assuming the resorts have activities but is there anything outside the resorts we should do?

Re: Anyone been to St. Lucia?

  • I went to Sandals Grande St. Lucia for our honeymoon a few years ago and loved it! Aren't you going there?
  • I'm pretty sure St. Lucia has a desalination plant so you can drink the water.  You should double check from a reputable source though.

I tend to stick to bottled water in the caribbean just because of the taste.  I haven't been to St. Lucia though.

    Where are you guys staying?

  • If I remember correctly, we ordered water from the bars at the resort which came to us in a glass and we were never sick so I think you should be ok. I know a few people went into the town nearby, went to the other St.Lucia resorts, and climbed the Pitons right near the resort, but we didn't do any of those things so I don't know how they were..

  • We did mountain biking and climbed Gross Piton. The brochure says it's a moderate hike. It's not: It's a moderate CLIMB.

I don't remember which resort it was but I was told they have 3 resorts there and you can go to all 3 of them with a shuttle that is provided.  I'm not one of those people that likes to hike - lol.  I will probably be doing yoga every day on the beach.

  • This post inspired me to go look. We have our 5 year anniversary this year and didn't have a honeymoon, so this would be a big trip. There are all inclusive Sandals resorts for 4 nights including air for $3,500 for two people. About the same price as the Bahamas actually.
  • We went to Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica for our honeymoon and really enjoyed it.  One of the nicer things about it is Sandals prohibits tipping, so we weren't handing out ones for every little thing.  Their fancy steak/seafood restaurant and bakery were also very very good, and we ate there a lot. I think most of the Sandals have similar policies and restaurants.  They aren't the cheapest AI chain, but we liked what they had to offer.

@Mom987, look at Whitehouse too.  The Jamaican resorts tend to be less expensive overall, and Whitehouse is entirely oceanfront.  Every single room has an ocean view, which is incredibly uncommon.  We booked the second cheapest room level ($30 more than the very cheapest and it put us on the top floor), and we still had a great view, balcony, etc.  Right now Sandals is the only resort on that beach, so you aren't sharing it with other resorts and there are no beach vendors trying to sell you stuff.  It's a beautiful location, and the beach is a couple miles long. We were there a couple years ago, and they were putting up palapas left and right to provide lots of shade on the beach also.  We loved it, and we were on a serious budget when we went.  It's about a 90 minute ride from the airport, but door-to-door transportation is included in your resort fee.

Me too.  It looks amazing!  I think H and I will be adding it to our travel wish list.  I've spent most of the day Googling tropical travel ideas as I sit here snowed in with my flight to Orlando delayed a day :-/

I haven't been to St. Lucia, but having been to the Bahamas I would say St. Lucia looks a bit nicer/prettier.  That said, I've only been to the two touristy Bahama islands, and the quieter "out" islands are supposed to be fantastic.  If you're going for the full AI experience the resort may also mean a bit more than the island itself.  We tend to like a nice resort, but also to get out and explore a bit.

@vlagirl can't wait to hear about your trip!

We've never done a resort before so that will be new for us.  We usually rent beach homes because it saves us money to prepare about half the meals in the house and eat out the other half of the time.  It's gonna be weird not having to go to the grocery store as soon as we get there but it will be nice not having to cook for once :)
