It doesn't seem that this board is really hopping, but hopefully someone checks it sometime!
My husband has a job offer in the city and we are scouting the suburbs. Can anyone recommend some family friendly, affordable suburbs?
We are looking around the $400k mark but need 4 bedrooms. Yikes!
I have found some I like in Bridgewater, though it seems the school district isn't amazing. And DH found some in Metheun, but that seems pretty far out.
There have to be some great suburban towns that I am missing!!
Re: New Bostonian ??'s
I don't live there anymore, but I always liked Salem, Newton, Needham, Natick, Cambridge, and Swampscott. Not sure what housing prices are doing these days. Our condo is pretty much underwater, so I often wonder if the RE market as a whole isn't a little down up there right now.
GL!!
Is he planning on driving or taking the T to work? How much of a commute is he willing to have?
Methuen is not a town I would want to live in.
Most of the towns that would meet your price requirements and criteria are a bit of a commute.
I know I'm a little late to this but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.
Bridgewater does NOT have a great school system. However, if it's an area you are interested in, West Bridgewater schools are much better (they are 3 diff towns.. bwater, east bwater, and west bwater), also Easton is a nice town in that area. Commute will not be horrible if he got a job in the city and you have the options of the train or driving in.
I moved to West Bwater last year because for what we could afford we got almost twice as much house and 3 times as much land as I could have in Milton (where I really wanted to be), and were only 15 min further south.
It's been a great move so far. I'm very happy with it.
I've lived in Newton for the last year and love it. Very family oriented. It's up there in price, but it depends which 'village' you live in. Newtonville and West Newton are some of the better prices. It's also very close to the commuter rail to get into the city. Good luck!
I would stay away from Methuen and Salem. I'm in Salem now, and the school system is terrible.
I grew up in Reading & would love to move back there. I think most towns in that area are good. Melrose, Wakefield, Lynnfield, Winchester. 400k for 4 bedrooms is going to be tough.
You could also try Marblehead but that's pretty expensive too
