Not MM-related: favorite books?

This has popped up on my facebook recently, and I'm curious to hear favorite genres/books from you all.

What are your must-reads?  What books were good enough to read again?

Re: Not MM-related: favorite books?

  • I love reading!

Favorite genre is definitely Fantasty or Mystery, but I do a lot of young adult and a few fluffy chick books here and there.

    Must reads Series:

Game of Thrones - George RR Martin (would reread if they weren't 1000 pages)

Harry Potter (of course) - JK Rowling (have relistened to them about 4 times each)

The Fever Series - Karen Moning

Rizoli and Isles - Tess Gerritsen

    Vampire Acedemy - Richelle Mead

    Percy Jackson - Riordon

Black Dagger Brotherhood - JD Ward

Ender's Game - Orsen Scott Card

Divergent - Veronica Roth (re read before movies)

Hunger Games - Collins (re read before movies)

All Souls Trilogy (Starts with Discovery of Witches) - Harkness

    Wool - Hugh Howey

    Stand Alone:

Ready Player One  (rumors for a sequel though)

    Eleanor and Park

    Dark Places - Gillian Flynn

Anything John Green (fault in our stars, Looking for Alaska were my favorites)

    Beautiful Disaster - Jamie McGuire

    Hopeless - Colleen Hoover

    Eliza Mae - September 16th, 2014

  • I'm definitely a Harry Potter fan as well - I've read all 7 books so many times I've lost count.  I also love the Golden Compass series.

I'm a big fan of Southern lit (except Faulkner - can't stand him) and dystopias.  1984 and Catch-22 both blew my mind (in good ways).  And Gone with the Wind is remarkably progressive for its time.  I hated the movie, absolutely loved the book.

For a quick read, Ella Minnow Pea is truly delightful.  It only takes an afternoon to get through, but it's so clever.

I also have to admit that I hate the Great Gatsby.  I've read it three times and hated it every single time.  I'm not a fan of his contemporaries either - I could honestly do without those 10 or so years of American lit.  It's all so very disenchanted and tragic.  I sort of want to shake the authors and tell them to get over it, you know?

Huckleberry Finn will always be my single favorite book.  It's the "great American novel" as far as I'm concerned.  I've read it a few times over the years, and each experience was very different.  The other Twain book I love is "Letters from the Earth."  It's not really a book, but a collection of his short stories. It's incredibly funny, especially his take on the diaries of Adam and Eve.

Not going to lie, I do love some John Grisham, even though it's a huge cliche since I'm a lawyer.

I read trashy romance novels when I need something predictable enough to fall asleep.... which i most nights.  Sigh.

  • I love love love Harry Potter.  The writing style, the way it traps you, everything.  I also thoroughly enjoyed the Twilight series, especially the last one.

  • Seconding Eleanor and Park (and anything written by Rainbow Rowell)

In terms of fantasy series, while I will always love Harry Potter, The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss are absolutely a must read.

But I love me some classics too, anything Jane Austen, To Kill a Mockingbird, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

  • I'm a big John Steinbeck fan. Love the Grapes of Wrath and some of his lesser known work. But by far my favorite of his is Cannery Row. I can't tell you how many times I've read that book. It's the best, and a pretty quick read. :)

  • I have been all over the Outlander series. It's eight books and they are long, but love them.
  • I am pretty scattered.

    Loved the Hunger Games.

Anything Jodi Picoult is worth a read. Just don't read too many in a row. They all follow the same format.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Animals by Don LePan, The Reader, The Great Gatsby, A Little Princess, The Virgin Suicides, Lord of the Flies, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Jane Eyre are probably my favorites.

I am also slowly picking through a big book of Grimm's Fairy tales which has been fun.

  • I agree about Jodi Picoult.  Good, but can blur together a bit.

I just finished reading "Big Little Lies" and it was so good.  I found myself reacting out loud during the end of it.  One of the best books I have read in years.
  • I'm a little all over the place but the few books I've loved to reread are scifi/comedies. One of my all-time faves is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Red Dwarf is also a good one.

    Other books I've loved:
Dan Brown's books, especially Deception Point
The Girl with the Dragon tattoo series
    Harry Potter (of course!)
    Hunger Games series
    Khaled Hosseini's (sp?) books
    Michael Crichton books
    Anniversary
  • Of course Harry Potter is on my list
I like all of Dan Brown's Books, his newest, Inferno, is probably my favorite
Jodi Picoult is good, for a quick read

I'm finally starting to make time to read after finishing my master's last summer, so of course all my amazon recommendations are health policy related.

Things I read a while ago that were good:
    pretty much anything Jane Austen
    Firefly Lane- Kristin Hannah

I'm also a little obsessed with how food systems affect public health so I enjoy most of Michael Pollan's books

I love the MIchael Pollan books.  I think that "Food Rules" is such a good book.  It really helped my husband understand why I (now we) eat the way I do.

I haven't found time for a proper response to this thread yet, but Michael Pollan is definitely on my list! We buy our meat from a place using the Polyface Farm system from Omnivore's Dilemma. He was not kidding about how good those eggs are...

  • I like Fantasy more.  My all time favorite series is the Recluse series by Modsitt Jr.  I still need to get some of the books in this series.  He has another series that is really good also.

Another great series that I had to get all of the books in is the Dies the Fire series.  Once again, I think there are new books in this series that I still need to read.

    Others:
    Terry Prachet's World
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe books
    Harry Potter
    Mercedies Lackey's World
I like some of the Shannara Series by Terry Brooks (haven't read all of the full series)
Stephen Lawhead is another great author and I love all of his books.

The author that I loved grown up is Louis Lamour.

I know that I butchered a lot of names etc, but doing this from memory.
  • I'm currently reading The Happiness Project. Next up is The Last Lincolns.

I love to read (when I have time) but have had zero interest in Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.

  • My "fluff", non edifying, reading includes:
Anything by John Grisham, James Patterson, Sidney Sheldon, Nelson DeMille and David Baldach.
Similar writing styles and story lines.  If you like one of these authors, you will most likely enjoy one of the others as well.

    I
  • That is David Baldachi - can't edit my post.
  • Speaking of favorite books - I hope everyone has seen that Harper Lee is publishing a sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird."  It sounds like she actually wrote this one first, but it takes place 20 years later.  Same characters.

    Mind. Blown.
