Talk to me about the Southwest companion pass

Hi all,

I might be misremembering, but doesn't somebody on these boards have a companion pass through Southwest?  I'm curious to hear how that has worked and whether working the cards for sign-up bonuses has been worthwhile for you.

We probably won't be interested in doing it for 2015, but possibly 2016.... H and I are trying to visit each of our remaining grandparents over the next couple of years in between our jobs and other travel, and Southwest flies to all of the US destinations we would need to get to.  This year we are going to try to visit his grandma in Belgium over Thanksgiving (we'll see...), and that will probably be all for this year.  Next year we will try to see the US grandparents.  Belgian grandma is much older than the others, so we really need to get over there ASAP if he wants to see her one more time.

So how does it work?  Can we book companion tickets on any flight where the cardholder books the primary ticket?  Are there blackouts?  After having the pass would you do it again if you could?

TIA

Re: Talk to me about the Southwest companion pass

  • We have it and love it.

I get a ticket for anywhere H flies on Southwest, regardless of whether that ticket is paid for or booked on miles. Additionally, I have used my miles to book in his name and it still works. There are no blackout dates. He can also change his companion a limited number of times throughout the year (I *think* twice).

The credit card sign up bonus of 50,000 miles counts toward your 110,000 miles to qualify. And it lasts for the rest of the calendar year in which you get it plus the following year, so it's best to strategize it in order to have it as long as possible.

We had it by March last year, and at this point are 25% of the way there again. H travels some for work but not crazy amounts, maybe 6-8 trips a year give or take, but they're usually last minute Business Select flights that earn lots of miles.

So do the points just continue to accrue and you get a pass in the year in which you hit 110,000 points?  Or do you have to hit 110,000 points in a single calendar year to get another pass? That's the part I'm fuzzy about.

Honestly, this seems like a great deal for people who might be taking a few domestic flights within a couple years.  We probably won't be flying domestically this year (that we know of yet), but in 2016 and 2017 there are 3 or 4 places we are thinking of visiting, depending on schedules and family planning and all that.

Other question: it sounds like once you hit the 110,000 points you get the pass... but you don't have to redeem those points for the pass, correct?  So you can book free flights with those 110,000 points for one person and then use the companion pass for the other, correct?

  • Single calendar year acquisition. The count towards 110,000 starts over Jan. 1 even if you already have miles banked.

And you're not using any of the 110,000 for your companion to fly free.

Got it, thanks - I think this is definitely something we will look into doing!  It would be nice to visit the grandparents for free.
