Romantic Getaway as Wedding Gift?

My cousin is getting married (she is one of my best friends and I'm a bridesmaid), and instead of giving them a kitchen appliance or something like that, I'd like to give them a "romantic getaway".  I was thinking I could get a gift card to a nice hotel, a gas gift card, and maybe a gift card to a restaurants nearby.  I'd make sure that the place is within a couple of hours driving distance, so it isn't a hassle. And I'd like to do it in a way that they can choose multiple weekends, and not be glued to any particular weekend.

First of all - is this even a good idea?

Second - Any ideas on how to do this logistically?  It would be awesome if I could find a way to do this on a discount like the packages that Groupon offers, but also something that gives them flexibility.

  • We got one of these!  We really like the gift, but somehow, a year and half later, we still haven't used it :-/  I am excited to, though!  I think it's my fault for all of the weekend jobs.  I think it's a great idea but agree with April that a chain would be best if that's a doable option.  How thoughtful!

I think it's a great idea, but I also think the bolded is important.  It can be one of those things that falls through the cracks.

Are they going on a honeymoon anywhere?  If so, you could surprise them with something or comp one of their activities or something.

We had the bolded happen to us on our honeymoon and we loved it! When we went to St.Lucia, my sister had set up a couples massage for us and a friend had sent a $50 credit for us to use on anything we were so surprised!

Yes, we also had this happen and it was wonderful!  My H told his BM about the fancy restaurant in Portland, ME that we were planning to splurge on the day after the wedding.  We got through the end of the meal, and then the server announced that it was paid in full by BM.  It was just the sweetest surprise.
  • Great idea but like PP, to get the deals with Groupons, you are normally limited on the days/weekends that fall under those prices and sometimes you have to book the date when purchasing the groupon & the dates are locked then. Are they going away on a Honeymoon anywhere? If so, try to find out where they are staying or if they have any plans for something special they want to do while they are there. Then contact the place and see if there is a way you can prepare for something for them or order a gift certificate for them to use. Then just make sure you give them their gift before the wedding in case they don't open their cards until after they come home.

If you can't comp something for them, any way you can get access to their home while they are gone? Then the day before they are scheduled to come home, go put some wine in their fridge & some snacks and maybe even a homemade meal that they can just put into the oven to cook or microwave. I can't imagine them not loving coming home from their trip to open their fridge to find dinner & wine waiting for them. You can maybe even set the table up for a romantic dinner with a note about finding the rest of their surprise in the fridge.

  • Erikan - That is such a sweet idea about leaving dinner for them! Unfortunately, I don't think it will work because I live far away from where they live.

I also love the idea about paying for an activity on their honeymoon! I will probably use that one!
  • I've done this now for both of my siblings and my best friend, arranged for something special on their honeymoon.  I think everyone really liked it, they seemed to and as long as you know sufficient detail about their plans, it's  not that hard to work out.  Plus since they're on their HM, you know they can use it.
