What are the small things that you do to save money?

Going with the theme, what are the small things that you do?

I am an avid bargain shopper-if I can't get a substantial discount on an item of clothing I generally will not buy it. I also like thrifting. For clothing that I no longer use I will sell to Plato's Closet, Thredup, or Like Twice. I donate less desirable brands, clothing that shows wear (but still has life in it), and shoes. I coupon--especially pet food because I feed my dog a more expensive brand. I also check out deal websites when I am in the market for something.

  • We work credit cards for points.  We earned over $1000 in points last year (without signup bonuses!).

I also shop through portals - points portals or ebates or befrugal... whichever will give me the best deal.

H and I also have a rule about eating out.... we work a block from each other so we have lunch together once a week.  Other than that, all eating out must be comped by our law firms (unless it's a major celebration like our anniversary or we have company coming to visit).  We've been sticking with that pretty well the last few months.

  • I coupon. Use cartwheel and target.com for store coupons. For my kids, I buy almost all of their clothes at resales. It really ticks me off if I have to spend more than $2 for a shirt. When I get to the end of a lotion container, I cut it in half and dig out the rest. I'm always amazed at what's left. I've been trying to decorate my house with homemade art. My favorite is stretching a piece of fabric over a wood frame.
  • I know my grocery price points very, very well. I'm also really careful with our utility usage. I wouldn't say I "coupon" but I use them for things like oil changes and use the Cartwheel app. No cable. I usually never eat full meals out; I'll just get a beer and an app when out with friends.
  • The small thing that I do is that I use store coupons, I cut the coupons only for those that I have a good chance of using, and since I shop at mainly one supermarket, I get fuel points that I can use to get reduced prices on gas.

Couponing's not really a big thing here but I will use the occasional one (like Michael's) and I seldom pay full price for anything. We have a decent stockpile of food and beverages so I pretty much only buy on sale, with the exception of fresh produce or farmers' market goodies. I buy a lot of clothing at thrift stores or on clearance. I use ebates and Checkout 51. We had no cable at all until they offered us a bundle that actually costs less with cable. We use credit cards for almost everything to earn points (and pay the balances in full each month). We cook from scratch, brew our coffee at home, things like that. We both work from home so there's seldom a need to bring or buy lunch, and obviously we save gas as well.
  • We don't do much to save money. We just spend nothing. We have gone a solid 15 days without spending a single penny and we could easily go longer with some self control.

    H drinks cheep beer.

I only wash my hair once or twice a week. This is for the health of my hair not MM. A bottle of shampoo lasts me about 9 months and my hair is long down my back and super thick.

    No cable.

  • something we did today was get VDay cards at the dollar store for family and a boxed set for DD's preschool class.  Why spend so much money on greeting cards?

I also coupon (not hardcore), shop sales and clearance, checkout 51, ebates, bring a coupon if we go out to eat at a sit down restaurant, make coffee at home, pretty much only eat out once or twice a week, rarely spend on entertainment ( no more than $20 a month).  Every little bit helps.

I think your self control is just fine :)  15 days is a very long time to not spend.  We at the very least have to get gas for our cars or pay bills within that time frame.

Haha. I like a challange! I would love to go from the day we pay our bills until the next day we pay a bill but H thinks I am crazy for even suggesting a whole month.

  • For us we don't buy lunches on weekdays. We eat leftovers or sandwiches and the only expenses we have Monday-Thursday would be groceries or monthly bills.

I hear ya.  I like the challenge too.  It's just so hard when you have a kid to not have the occasional spending on food, dance/preschool tuition.  we did manage to not eat at a sit down restaurant this weekend which hasn't happened in a long time.
