What would you do if you won the $450mil Powerball Jackpot? How much would it take for both you and DH to quit your jobs?

  • N/A??? We don't play the lotto. I suppose we would both quit our jobs and maybe just volunteer with engineers without borders.

That's a lot of cash!  We'd probably quit both our jobs for 1 million.  We'd still have to work, but could pick different careers.  If we won the powerball, we'd keep 20 million and give the rest away.  Mo money, mo problems.

**ETA: In case anyone ever does win or come into that kind of money, the first thing you need to do is not tell ANYONE but DH.  Don't call your parents, don't call your friends.  Don't quit your job right away.  Live your life like everything is normal.  If you're lucky, you live in a state where lotto winners are confidential.  Not all states are like this.

Call the biggest, fanciest law firm in the nearest major city and make an appointment.  Don't try to go to a solo attorney or someone who isn't familiar with dealing with that kind of money.  A big corporate firm will get you all set up with trusts, security tips, and a good financial advisor.  And remember, a "loan" to family and friends is never actually a loan, it's a gift.  Don't expect to get it back.**

  • I probably wouldn't up and quit my job right away either way. But I would quit. I don't know what amount it would need to be. Maybe 5-10 million. If we were to ever win a huge jackpot the first thing we'd do is go on a long vacation until the hype died down. Then get an awesome financial adviser. Pay off all debt for ourselves and our family. Then who knows.

  • I'd still work, but cut down to part-time. Pay off debt and buy a nice house. Invest the rest so it would last a nice long time. Travel to all the places I want to see but haven't had the money/time off to go to. And I know H would want to open and own his own gaming shop.

  • I'd love to be able to stop working, but that probably wouldn't happen because we are responsible for our employees living.  I'd probably try to hire someone to take over my position but I'd still manage things and work part time.  I'd probably feel comfortable doing this with 10 million in winnings.

I'd pay off my parents and H's parents debt, move H's parents to a nice house closer to us, get a financial planner, and go on vacation for two weeks every other month to as many places as I could think of.

  • H and I talk about this whenever it gets big.

If we won, I'd take a sick day and do want @ramstein1027 said - get an attorney.  MD is a confidential state!  And then get a financial advisor.  I'd like to make trust fund for each kid, and invest the rest so we live off interest forever.

    1. pay off debt, ours and parents

    2. quit job to be a SAHM

    3. let H buy his tractor trailer

    4. buy a house in NC near the kids.  Enough room for all of us (parents, kids, etc).  House keeper

    5. Get 50/50 custody of kids

    6. Get Ryan in a private school for autism

    7. BIG vacation to Europe!  With a relaxing stop on some amazing island.

  • I think we would quit our jobs for 2 million. If we won the big prize we would pay off our mortgage, our parents mortgages, buy a lot of acreage, invest and travel.

  • For a million dollars, I would take a leave of absence until O goes to school.  For $10 million, I think we would both quit.

If we won the $450 million, I wouldn't say anything and get affairs in order.  We would wait a bit until the hysteria wore off before claiming.  I believe in NY you can't claim anonymously. I would like to pick up and move to a warmer climate.
  • I'm not sure if I would quit my job.. at the very least, I'd drop down to part time.

At the very least, I'd use a bit to buy/build our house and possibly help my parents with some of their med bills. Rest would probably get saved for our possible child's future.

  • I would quit my job immediately. H would probably keep his because he loves it. Although he might move to a private company. They pay more and can have happier employees than the state, but work isn't always guaranteed. If we had the $$, it wouldn't matter.

We would probably build a nice house, pay off my car, my diamond, our couch and tv.....create college accounts and trust funds for the kids. Get H a new car. Save the rest.
