Taxes- made less than $5000

Last year I had a baby in August and I quit working about a month before that. I made less than $5000 all year. My husband and I are Married filing Jointly. I found a table on the internet but I was just confused by it. Taxes give me a headache. Lol. TIA.

Re: Taxes- made less than $5000

  • I am asking if I have to file my income if I made less than $5000 last year.
  • Sorry, just reread that and I didn't really ask a question originally. Lol.

  • If you made less than $3,900 combined with your husband you don't have to file. Anything over that must be filed/reported.

  • Yes, you need to file. Even with the little income you had, you have to officially report it. Chances are depending on how you file. Even if it means you get everything you paid in back. You don't want to be hit up down the road with penalties & interest on the penalties for not filing at all.
  • Yes you will still need to file.  Just because you made less than $5k, doesn't mean your household didn't make over that.

  • Thank you. It's all done. :)
  • there's a lot of misinformation in this post. If $5,000 is all you and your husband made last year, then yes, you are not required to file. But you can still file to get your withholding (money taken out for federal income taxes. Box 2 on your W-2) back. If your husband had a job and together you made less than $20,300, you don't have to file, but you should to get your withholding back and you'd probably qualify for Earned Income tax credit. If together you made more than $20,300, the yes you have to file.
  • @smerka‌ I just want to clarify, the number I gave was what we were taught when I was a tax preparer.

  • $3,950 is the threshold for a dependent. For 2014. $3,900 is for 2013.
  • A wife is not a dependent. Wife is a joint filer.
Even with a low income - you need to file. Joint filing tends to give the better results over filing separately.
There is an increased ceiling for the EIC (Earned Income Credit) - you may qualify.

I did my taxes this weekend and they are in the mail.  Took 6 hours total to do Fed and State.  Not my favorite thing to do.
