Health Savings Account Question

So tomorrow I will be having a tooth extracted. I have made sure the dentist is in network and I checked our plan. The dentist says the extraction will cost $250 before insurance. My plan says it covers 80% of simple extractions. So, if I am understanding correctly I should only have to pay $50 tomorrow right? My second question is can I be reimbursed the $50 from our HSA? Is dental considered a medical expense? Or would it only cover things that I would use my regular health insurance for?

Re: Health Savings Account Question

  • Do you have a deductible?  You will probably pay a deductible plus the out of pocket portion.

I'm not sure about the HSA, it should qualify as "medical" but it may depend on how the HSA is set up.

  • Our annual deductible is $50. (We learned our lesson the last time and went with the most expensive plans all around)

  • ded plus 20% is what you would owe.  yes HSA allows dental

  • So I will pay $100 then right? And then get reimbursed?

  • not reimbursed - you will be able to deduct it on your 2015 taxes

  • $100 is correct.  make sure you don't have a waiting period for extractions.  if you recently got a plan there is usually a 6 month waiting period

  • I don't have a waiting period so that is good.

  • You can reimburse yourself through your HSA, if that is what you are asking.

  • When I had my wisdom teeth extraction, the dentist over charged me based on their own estimate of what my insurance would cover then when they got the check from my insurance, they sent me a check. Took over a month to get the money back.
  • How much over did they charge?

  • They assumed my insurance would only cover 50% not 80% and assumed my deductible was $100 when it is $50. It was for three teeth with anesthesia, so I think they charged me around $450 when It should have been around $200.
  • $50 deductible plus 20% copay on remaining balance is $90. I participate in a medical flex account. I elect X amount of money to be put into the account pretax. As I receive medical bills, I submit them for reimbursement. My employer has it set up to be included in my pay (so they don't have to cut a separate check). The IRS website has a list of approved expenses. I've submitted dental, vision (glasses, contacts), doctor copays, prescription copays, etc.

  • You'll owe the $50 deductible plus 20%. You can definitely use your HSA for dental expenses.

  • If the dentist bills $250 your insurance may negotiate that total down.  When I go to the dentist/Dr. I always try to get them to send a bill in the mail instead of paying in the office.  If insurance negotiates it down, I don't want to overpay upfront and then have to spend the time getting a refund.
